Like the title says. At what temp do the fans kick on, on the 04 GTO? Searched and couldnt find an answer.

if you are going to be doing any kind of mods to the engine you will want a 160 degree Thermostat there are alot of companies that sell them I know SLP off hand

i would NOT run a 160 in any fuel injected car i own
why is this? I have talked to a bunch of companies and they say to run one
i would NOT run a 160 in any fuel injected car i ownPlease tell the reason for this. I've had mine in for almost 7 years in the GTO. Every performance car I've had I swapped to a cooler thermostat.
Curious as to your reasoning.

ls motors are more effiecent at temps between 180-200 degrees. closed loop fueling also kicks in around 155 i believe. there have been cases were a 160 stat in cooler weather won't let the motor reach a temp for closed loop to kick in. also all my best slips have been with a 200* motor and cool air. to each his own i guess

I agree. Lower the fan settings and keep the stock stat. I know it's hard to believe that a company that sells lower stats would tell you replace it.

I have the engine in my 91 fox. The first fan kicks on at 190 i believe but the second fan is not kicking on but the highest ive let the engine get is to 220. The engine has a 228r cam but i have no plans on changing the thermostat as ive read many times it dioesnt benefit the engine at all.
Thanks for the help guys guess Ill start checking the wiring for issues.

FWIW, my SLP 160 t-stat ran 184-188 on I-70 in 30 degree weather. Plenty warm.
My fan settings are:
Fan 1 on: 190
Fan 2 on: 199
Ignition off:
Disable Temp: 185
Run Time: 300 sec.
I have the fan run for 5 minutes after I shut the car off. Something I always liked when I had my 87 GN and 89 TTA.

Fan 1 on: 195
Fan 1 off: 190
Fan 2 on: 205
Fan 2 off: 195
Ign off: 205
Run time: 255

So what does that get you in terms of power over someone like me running the stock tstat and having temps of 194-201 with adjusted fan settings?
So what does that get you in terms of power over someone like me running the stock tstat and having temps of 194-201 with adjusted fan settings?Couldn't tell you exactly. When mine was stock, it ran best at around 185. I used the temp gauge in the Mode/Set to go by. I would loose 1mph or more if it was above 190. Same goes if it was colder than 180. But that is my car.
Definitely a lot harder trying to keep that temp back then when the fans kick on a lot higher than 185. Basically a game trying to keep that temp in the lanes and staging. But I got fairly well at it :)
