I had similar problems with my 98 SS. I can't really say what the problem was, but I upgraded to the truck alternator for a 2004 tahoe and the problem went away. They are cheap on ebay from salvage yards and seems to be made alot better than the f-body ones.

That doesn't really make any sense to me. I hate the location of the F-body alternators. I would check your connections and possibly replace the alternator. I am planning on relocating mine because I may go turbo some time in the future.

my sister had an 85 camaro that did the same thing. turned out to be corrosion on the power wire at the alternator.

Ha, I just put an alternator on this morning. It's not that fun, could've been worse though. Wish I had a lift...

^ yea do this, i discovered last night when I pulled the alternator that my exciter wire had been ripped out before then rigged back together. Had to buy a new alternator connector because I didn't want to put it back in like that.
