My A4 hits 70 in 1st... WTF?! how practical is an A4 to M6 swap?
the previous owner had to have messed wit hthe ratio. with a 1st gear pull (haha) it is a slow and steady rise to 70-75 shifting around 6000. Im assuming this is putting a lot of strain on my tranny, i usually dont do this.
When it hits around 70... the transmission crackles!!!! almost like popcorn or jumping beans.. bizarre. When this tranny goes, id like to go manual and get the real ss experience. not interested in stall converters, this is a streeter. What would i need to change to switch to m6? iwould be sending it to a shop to be done.

Is this an fbody? Even with 28" tall oversized tires and 2.73s they don't hit 70 in first gear. I think you might have a tranny problem and actually be in 2nd gear. Have you counted the shifts, making sure not to include the converter lockup?

w/ a 26in tall tire and 2.73's your motor would have to shift at 7600rpms to be at 70. you would need 2.08's to hit 70 in 1st with stock or close to stock shift points. +1 for starting off in 2nd

Plenty of people have swapped the a4 for an m6. There is a sticky with lots of good info, and it includes a list of parts needed to swap. But, since you want a shop to do it, that's probably going to get very expensive.

There's PLENTY of people on this forum daily driving their cars even with 4000 stalls with no issues. Personally I wouldn't go that big, but I don't see why a mild 3000ish stall would be any kind of labor to drive on the street. City mileage would suffer a few mpgs, but you're still getting better mileage than all the soccer moms driving around in their SUVs...

I feel the same way about a converter really.. I don't wanna hurt my fuel econ with needless reving. There's no room for even a poor condition stock Fbody to run around here. I could be in a smart and get to work at the same time. It's the few miles of open road that sets my car apart from the dodge omni with rust all over it next to me every morning in traffic.
But still.. converter aside.. your tranny shoudln't be starting you off in 2nd. The crackling is also kind of concerning. Sounds like you need a tune and/or inspection on the tranny imo.
now.. if you DO decide you need to swap tranny and you stick with an A4.. yea I'd get a converter then.. but a converter by itself isn't gonna fix this I don't think.
