Default Thunder Racing 219/236 cam

I'm seriously considering a Thunder Racing "TR LS3" cam that is 219/236 .607/.607 on a 117 LSA (the first one listed on this page) for my 99 Vette.

http://www.thunderracing.com/shop-by...shafts_88.html

I'm wondering if anyone here has one of these - preferably with a 6 speed. If so, can you tell me about quality of idle, low-end response, etc.

I'd do this along with a set of ported 243's. already have a Vararam, 25%ud pulley, ported tb, LS6 intake, B&B shorty headers, x-pipe and SLP Powerflo, 6 speed and 3.42's. I'm in Kalifornia, so I have to deal with smog. Also, I drive it a lot - 23K miles so far this year - in traffic, etc., so it HAS to have stock type manners.

I'm NOT interested in peak "track" power, I want broad overall power. I'd rather make 400 rwhp with a flat torque curve than 450 rwhp and have poor manners and no low-end. "Fun" power is more important.

Why run a cam thats designed for LS3 heads and intake in a cathedral port setup?! If you're looking for something small that will pass smog and still make decent power look into the 224 cam or something similar. You'll still have great drivability and make good usable power under the curve. Hope this helps

I second this opinion as the reason the exhaust has 17 more degrees than the
intake is to crutch the poor EX. to IN. flow percentage common to the LS3
heads. If you're runnin ported heads that flow about 75-80% E/I ratio then
try the TR 224 or call Geoff @ EPS for his popular 222/226 cam which will pass
Cal smog and have perfect street manners.

Thanks guys! With all the acronyms thrown around, I want to make sure that TR means Thunder Racing, and if so, which specific cam do you mean?

Also, who/what is EPS?

He (Geoff) designed the original Thunder Racing 224 cams and has since moved on and started his own shop EPS, and has developed a new series of cam lobes that perform like much larger cams power wise but still have small durations and excellent manners. Many of his 226 cams are making 450rwp+ with ported heads.

EPS is Engine Power Systems: http://www.engpwrsys.com/ Geoff is a vendor here.

Like was said, avoid the LS3 cam, its just not ideal for your setup.

I actually ran the TSP 224R in my stalled auto, and made 350/352 through an otherwise stock LS1 longblock, stock manifolds/cats, SLP Y, and Loudmouth catback. It also easily passed smog.

Interesting. Mine is already making 340 to the wheels.

he's making that through a stalled auto. depending on what stall, those at stellar numbers. that could be close to 390rwhp through a 6 speed. i would guess a 3000 stall

Yeah, it was pretty decent power for the small cam, through an Unlocked Yank SS3600 in my 01 Trans Am.
