Default Cabin Illumination Ideas

So, I just had this crazy idea of attaching a wide LED strip in the gap between the headliner and the windshield as a substitute for the map lights. Can you guys think of other cabin illumination methods? Using lighting parts from other cars, etc.. I want get a mirror that doesn't have map lights, but still want forward cabin illumination. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Umm, let's c, I was always partial to UV LEDS.

LED strip between headliner and the windshield (DONE)
LEDS in rear view mirror openings (DONE)
LED strips in foot wells (DONE)
LED strips under front, sides and bottom (facing rear) of front seats (DONE)
LEDs in rear dome light (DONE)

Personally (and I can see me getting flamed for this) I've always wanted some sort of overhead console that had some lights and sunglasses holder type things in it. Maybe a place to hide a radar jammer/detector, ipod, gps something.... Preferably something slim and sleek like the later model chevy trucks or tahoes.

You could do all kinds of lighting tricks with one of those. I've also wanted a rear view mirror with temp and direction with orange or red lights. Any ideas on that?

I like the led strip light idea you mentioned.

^^^ That looks super trippy. Almost like something from a video game. I like the different approach.

Lee, I'm not sure if you recall me talking about this a few years ago...

My idea was to utilize the interior lighting from like a SAAB?
For those that don't know, it's like a directional light source:

I believe some mini-vans utilized it as well.

Can you please show us some pictures of these LED modules in the daytime with them turned off? So we can see how you mounted them, etc.

Yeah and I told you that one wouldn't fit because it's huge... But it's a good idea. The main issue I found with roof consoles is that they are pretty much all too tall to be used in an F-body, which doesn't have a lot of head room (can't obscure the mirror). This is the only one I found that would be remotely close to what I'd be looking for, and even then it's somewhat pricey and I'm not even sure it'd work on a hardtop car without extra fab work: http://www.adiautotech.com/4thgen/index.htm

I just bought one that has temp, compass, homelink (garage door opener), map lights, and orange/red display. Your best bet is to try to find one like this guy and I: http://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/showp...57&postcount=1

There's one left on eBay at a Buy It Now price of $200 (double what I paid): http://www.ebay.com/itm/190478478186...#ht_1448wt_648
The OE-spec wiring harness + sensors is another $58:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/300645760968...#ht_2823wt_881

The current Gentex lineup doesn't have one that has compass, temp, homelink, and map lights in one unit - they used to make them but they wanted like $400+ for them, and people weren't really buying them so I guess that's why they discontinued the units. Also, most of the ones that you will find for sale have a green display or some funky mounting bracket that won't work in an F-body.

That'd probably work, hardtops share the same hump as ttop cars. It'd just look really out of place...

I meant due to a difference in the shape of the headliner between T-top cars and hardtop cars. :\

Funny... that is a pic of an early 4th-gen. Some early 4th-gen came with that as a factory option although its relatively rare.

I have 2 of those upper consoles sitting near my desk. I haven't installed either yet in my 2001 Formula because my late 4th-gen doesn't have the mounting holes and studs in the roof. I'll have to drill/tap some holes or weld on some nuts. It's on my to-do list. I just haven't gotten around to it (along with other interior upgrades). I also plan to update it a bit to look newer and fit the interior better.

Here is the install guide that goes with that pic:

You've given me more ideas. Thanks guys.

I mean that in both a positive and sarcastic tone as it is yet another thing that I want to look into
