Cabin Illumination Ideas
LED strip between headliner and the windshield (DONE)
LEDS in rear view mirror openings (DONE)
LED strips in foot wells (DONE)
LED strips under front, sides and bottom (facing rear) of front seats (DONE)
LEDs in rear dome light (DONE)

You could do all kinds of lighting tricks with one of those. I've also wanted a rear view mirror with temp and direction with orange or red lights. Any ideas on that?
I like the led strip light idea you mentioned.

My idea was to utilize the interior lighting from like a SAAB?
For those that don't know, it's like a directional light source:

I believe some mini-vans utilized it as well.

There's one left on eBay at a Buy It Now price of $200 (double what I paid): http://www.ebay.com/itm/190478478186...#ht_1448wt_648
The OE-spec wiring harness + sensors is another $58:

The current Gentex lineup doesn't have one that has compass, temp, homelink, and map lights in one unit - they used to make them but they wanted like $400+ for them, and people weren't really buying them so I guess that's why they discontinued the units. Also, most of the ones that you will find for sale have a green display or some funky mounting bracket that won't work in an F-body.

I have 2 of those upper consoles sitting near my desk. I haven't installed either yet in my 2001 Formula because my late 4th-gen doesn't have the mounting holes and studs in the roof. I'll have to drill/tap some holes or weld on some nuts. It's on my to-do list. I just haven't gotten around to it (along with other interior upgrades). I also plan to update it a bit to look newer and fit the interior better.
Here is the install guide that goes with that pic:
