Can a person make a 400ci LS1 with just all bore?
I was wondering....I eventually want to stretch my 346 into a 400....nothing like a 400 in a TA...anyway, I was wondering if it can be done by bore only...I've seen 346's stretched out 388 with only bore, I was wondering if any of you guru's could answer this for me....should I prepare to buy a crank or just find a nice sleeve set up....

Brian, if you guys do the math and offset grind a stock crank you'll be right at 400 cubes (396 to 399 or so). Not that much work to do. Requires a completely different rod setup though. They use an Integra bearing on the crank I believe to accept the smaller journal size. Harold Chapman (BlackSunshine 00/SS) has one. Nice setup.

Texas Speed has run a very offset ground stock crank 3.82" at some serious power levels without failure. It was like 480+rwhp na and alot more on the juice.
I can't ever remember reading about a stock crank, offset ground or not, breaking from too much power.

BTW the bore and stroke on classic Pontiac engines are as follows...
400 4.121 bore & 3.75 stroke
455 4.152 bore & 4.21 stroke
The bore & stroke combo's for the sleeved LS1 with an offset ground crank or 4.125 are pretty close to the old Pontaic 400 & 455 bore and stroke combo's.

Steve, you mean the .7852 X BORE X BORE X STROKE X # OF CYL formula?
I havent seen any high hp cars with an offset ground crank. On the same token, i havent seen any stock cranks break for that matter. I dont know if the additional cost involved would be worth the 13 cubes.

It's not high HP, 420 HP on a nitrous tune, 400TH, HD driveshaft, 12 bolt, slicks. But good enough for a 11.1 on motor & 9.90 with a 200 shot. Just a dinky little 232/236 112 cam. Look for some improvements on the times this year.
I think that for the $ it's worth it to go with a offset ground crank. I'm told the motor will handle a 400 shot with this crank. We just might find out later in the year..

Harold,
The 382 pistons are an off the shelf piece. The rods are off the shelf. With the 300 for the ground crank and 150 extra for the custom pistons, you are only 400 bucks away from having a 427.

With the prices on cranks lower now, it would make more sence to go to something bigger, for just a few $$ more. However when I ordered the engine to be built over a year ago, the cheaper cranks were not an option,
If I were going to upgrade now, would I be able to reuse anything in my current rotating assembly? Such as pistons, rods, etc. My understanding is that I would need to change the crank, rods, pistons.
You are right, today, it would make more sence to fork up a few more hundred & go 422-427.
