Default Huron Speed + 1999 Z28 Build Thread

I am just getting started with the actual build but I’ve spent the past several weeks planning and collecting parts. I’m keeping the build simple and in an effort to minimize cost and maximize reliability I’m using lots of stock GM parts. I don’t have any specific power goals; just looking for a fun street car on 93 octane. I plan to start around 8psi with the potential to add more boost with meth injection in the future.

Here are the details:
-1999 Camaro Z28 with T56 and Moser 9”
-Stock shortblock
-Huron Speed turbo kit (single front mount)
-317 truck heads
-02-04 LS6 cam
-LS9 valve springs
-LS9 head gaskets
-ARP head studs
-60# Siemens injectors
-RPS 50mm BOV
-Derale 16925 pusher fans
-76-78mm turbo (undecided)
-Wastegate (undecided)
-Boost controller (undecided)

I have almost everything I need except for the turbo, wastegate, and boost controller. For the turbo I’m leaning towards the Turbonetics Hurricane series (either a 76 or 78) but I might be persuaded to try On3 Performance. Jon (Superman09) from Huron Speed showed me an On3 turbo he has and it definitely looks like a nice unit and hard to beat for the price. For the wastegate I’m looking for a nice used Tial MVR or Precision PW46. If I don’t find what I’m looking for by the time I need it I will just buy new.

On to the pictures…

I just received the Huron Speed kit last night and I am very impressed. The pictures don’t do it justice. These guys thought of everything so the kit is very complete (gaskets, couplings, alternator relocation brackets, etc):

The teardown begins! My plan is to swap the heads, cam, injectors and get it running on 2 bar speed density before installing the turbo. In the meantime I am selling my current setup to help fund this project. Most parts are spoken for but PM me if you are interested in some Livernois Stage 2 LS6 heads (64cc chambers and Livernois springs/retainer good for .690 lift). I only ran them for 1 summer (less than 3,000 miles).

Head swap is next on the agenda…

I will try to update this as often as possible but the progress will be slow at first. My wife and I just moved into a new house late last year so this spring I am working on the yard, landscaping, etc. Once the house stuff is complete (or when it’s raining) I plan to make better progress

Thanks for the post Dave! The kit looks nice all set out like how it will bolt up, shows how complete it really is!

Enjoy, and if you have any questions always feel free to give me a call!

Small update…

I ordered a Burkhart front bumper support today and I collected a few more parts this week. Here is my RPS 50mm blow off valve:

Nice! Are you going to drill into the oil pan for the drain return?

Looking good so far! Drilling and tapping the pan and trying to clean it out is a huge PITA in the car. And those Huron speed kits really do look super nice

So many variables for dyno numbers.... what turbo you choose, what your engine set up is, how much boost you run, what your driveline is, etc.

Our test car has a TH400 in it. We will have it at the track soon once they open here in Michigan. With the trans, dyno numbers aren't real important as track times would show!

This always cracks me up. You don't buy a turbo kit based on "what kind of power or times someone made or ran." You decide what turbo it takes to make the power you want then choose the kit. Any kit is just piping and is capable of what the turbo is. There would be no reason to wait to buy this kit if you like it.

Hit the nail on the head, thanks!

I'm hurrying but work keeps getting in the way. I'm in Shanghai right now for my second time this month
