Question Cam install degree?

Installing my new cam and want I need to know is do I need to "degree" the cam or is it fine just installing with the timing lined up. I am a little bit confused with this part.

You need to install it at the cam card specs. You will need a degree wheel, a pointer and a dial indicator. some simple math and of course a degree-able cam sprocket setup.

I can line crank dot to cam dot. That is what I was unsure about is can i get away with just doing that or if I needed to do the whole degreeing process.

You can install it dot to dot but wont get optimum efficiency from the cam. I highly recommend you degree the camshaft to the manufactures spec. If you don't have the tools or know how pay for someone to do it for you. if you search online you can find articles and/or videos on how to degree a camshaft.

LOL a tune doesn't adjust those parameters.

No, your basically advancing or retarding the camshaft depending on the cam card specs. it's all mechanical. You have to do it before you get the pcm tuned for optimum efficiency of the cam swap.

It should be correct dot to dot, but people and machines make mistakes and they get ground slightly diff than what was proposed..

I was always a dot to dot guy because I figured if it was made by pro's then it's all perfect.

But I guess it comes down to how much of a perfectionist do you want to be? I.e. Checking pushrod length, cam degree, etc..

Well, checking push rod length isn't a "perfectionist" thing. That needs to be done for proper valve train geometry.

I can can count the threads when they ask "what push rod with 243/317heads" on stock ls1.....

So I think it's quite the same, there is alot of shops I won't name and tuners who specifically gave me dot to dot advice

It has nothing to do with machine mistakes, it has to do with how the camshaft was ground by the company. It is the deg of the centerline of the intake lobe ATDC. Some large camshafts have to be properly deg or else you can have PTV contact.

I agree the lifter pre-load will determine noisy valve train, shitty engine idle or a quite smooth engine.

You could get by with dot to dot, but when you get it on the dyno and something doesn't seem right. A good tuners probably going to start asking install questions. And did you degree the cam is probably going to be one of the first. If you degree it and the power doesn't seem right you'll know it isn't because the cam isn't installed correctly.

Measuring the pushrods would be the next thing that most don't do.
