Default New best! Time for gears?

Finally got out this year after the exhaust and got my new best. A4 trans am, full weight and 2.73 gears. Full suspension, MT et streets, lid, home ported TB, TSP headers, TSP catted y, loudmouth II, Tune. Dyno'd 319rwhp

No traction issues with the et streets at all.

60'.....2.039
1/8....8.727
mph...83.58
1/4....13.345
mph...105.98
DA = 2321

Im happy but really wanted to get in the 13.2's. You guys think 3.73 gears would help me out more than an ls6 intake? Im shifting into 3rd right before the finish with these 2.73's

3:23 rear would work great plus a Yank SS3600 stall .

Damn thats impressive! Im thinking the ls6 intake is the next mod. Its not gonna get me anywhere near your times but hopefully in the 13.2s. A stall is no doubt in the future!

keep the gears. put a 3600 converter. FTI is my choice. gears are the most overrated mod out there for an automatic car if you are on a 26" tire.

Put a Stall in it. I just did a SS4000 with 273s It takes longer getting used to. But I have 373s going in about 2 to 3 weeks,

Converter. Then LS6 intake. Then maybe gears if it feels mushy around town to you.

I agree with Gator gears are super over rated.

My 10 bolt with 3.73s broke, I had to swap a 2.73 10 bolt in for the meantime, the only thing I really noticed was that it takes a little more effort at part throttle from a stop...

Converter. Gears and intake together won't gain you even 1/4 as much as a quality stall.

I disagree. Gears certainly make a difference. I went from a 4.11 to a 3.23 in my old stroker and the butt dyno went way down. I agree with doing the stall first but if you can find a low mile 3.42 rear for like 200 that will help alot too.

Not everyone wants to put a higher stall converter in their car.. especially with 2.73's, driving that around would suck. Dont see many fast cars running 4000 stalls and 273 gears so there must be something to gain from a gear swap..

Gears will certainly feel a ton faster but the car will not gain as much as the butt dyno would have you believe. I went from 2.56 to 3.08 to 3.42 and never saw more than .15 variance at the track.

You don't see many people with a big stall and stock gears because people like that butt dyno result. Nothing wrong with that and gears definitely make the car feel quicker....but if the OP wants track results a stall is the best way to get them.

My personal results:
gears 2.56 to 3.42 (a similar jump to 3.73 from a 2.73) = ~.15 in the 1/8th
Yank SS3600 = .7 in the 1/8th first time out and eventually .8 faster

Since the OP has a rollbar and ET Streets I would assume he would want as much out of the car at the track as possible. That being said a high stall converter produces the most gain in an auto other than N2O/FI. I'm not saying not change the gears..just a converter will give you more of a gain.

Add a steeper gear and it will multiply the effect of the stall even more on launch.

I agree.

If he can find a deal on them and install them free/cheap it might be more worthwhile. That or just invest in a better rear with the gears for the combo.

thanks for the replys everyone. Yes a stall would be ideal and it is in the future (built trans with 3600 stall most likely) but for this year it's too expensive. If gears would help me a bunch in the meantime I wouldve gotten them over the winter with the stock rear. After reading the replys im thinking ill wait do the stall/trans and then get a s60 with 3.73s since the gears dont seem worth it at the moment. Thanks for the info!

The main reason for getting gears is to help the stall feel tighter. From a roll my 3.73s didn't feel like they added much over the 2.73s now.

I actually just want some 3.23s or maybe a 3.42 rear...the only way I'm getting 3.73s+ is if I get a built rear
