Default Tranny or rear end shot? Clunking.

Ok, I bought a car earlier this year, and it has had this weird noise ever since I got it. It's a 1998 Trans Am, LS1, T56. When you shift into gear, it makes a bad clunk and some other noise, that's hard to describe. It sounds like it's coming from the trans area. I thought maybe it was a universal, but upon jacking the car up, I found a lot of play in the driveshaft, when the car was in neutral, ebrake off. I made a short video to show you exactly what I am talking about. Surely the trans or rear end shouldn't have this much play in it? This can't be good.

Car has high mileage, (335,000kms) but the trans was supposedly rebuilt at 280,000kms.

First shot is of the trans end of the driveshaft, second shot is of the rear end.

BTW, that oil everywhere is just undercoating. What a mess.

whats depicted in the video is somewhat normal. if your hearing a thunk in the trans tunel area you should check your transmission mount first. the rear suspension is set up such that the torque arm will lift the trans under load and make it bump the trans tunnel if the mount is bad

unfortunatly, on my car, a 99 z28 m6, has nearly TRIPLE the play in the driveshaft EXACTLY LIKE THAT VIDEO but 3 times as much play...ok, im assuming this is bad...someone help.

Check your motor mounts. Mine had a loud bang when I got on it, and turned out my header bumped the floor.

lol i wish it was simple. in the video you see how the driveshaft turns by hand and move about 1/4, my drive shaft moves almost 3/4 way around when you turn it by hand, in gear. no ebrake. it also clunks real good from the rear end but im pretty sure thats from a worn out panhard rod bushing or the pos job of the exhaust install.

I had it checked for the clunk when I owned it, Ujoints were fine etc etc.

Always had a bit of "clunk" if you shifted at low speed and were a little abrupt with clutch and created some slack in the driveline

I drove it nice/hard and inbetween for 40ish thousand km That ive owned it without issue.

Shift2007 did you ever figure out what was causing your clunk?
