Yeah that's the over all plan. I just know there popular on the f-body. They seem to be reliable for a street/ drag setup

It is very popular, and its been proven to be a great choice. Another head that seems to be right with it is the 5.3 (862) which is what i recently purchased, but they are TSP CNC'd, dual springs .650, larger valves. Some like these more because of the Compression, 11:1 and are decent for spraying.
So many choices tho, just take your time and pick whatever is best for your set up/future plans.

Any head with a port job will have a noticible gain. A set of ported 241's will outperform a stock set of 243's all day. But once you get some work done to the 243's there is no comparison. The 241 is a little thinner than the 243, therefore not being able to get the full desired angles.
Im my opinion OP, you should avoid headaches, and just get some used cnc'd 862's or 243's. 241's can only take you so far.
Some claim the 317 is also a good choice once the valves are milled, but im not very familiar with them. (Piston slap maybe a problem).

Not what I heard one of the very well known cnc companies last time I was cylinder head shopping. With the exact same porting and cnc work, both heads perform very similar. And the same porting can be done to both. True 243s still flow a little more then 241s, but not by a big margin. 243s are just so much more glorified on the forums.
Really? Always known the 243 had more meat in it for a better port job, where the 241 lacks. Thought you could only port the 241 so far before getting into the water.
I stand corrected!

this is a newb question for me since i know nothing about heads and cams. seeing how 243's are really popular, what kind of cam will work really well with it? ported and unported? what's the difference between the stage 1, 2.5, and the stage 3 ls6 heads?

For me money is an issue but if I don't mind putting back a little longer if something else would be superior... How much would it run on average to get stock heads done?

So if you're on a budget and only have lets say approx. $1300 to spend on heads and you already have a set of 241's. You're going to get more performance putting the money towards the 241's rather than buying a set of 243's and using the remainder of the money to cnc those.
About $1300 at AI (Advanced Induction) or TEA (Total Engine Airflow). You can't go wrong with either company, they're both top notch.

So lets say i took my stock heads off and sent them in to be cnc. That would get me just as much preformace as getting 243 heads and getting those cnc'd?
