Default 4l60e to deadhook 450whp

Gents,

I've finally got the car running well making 450+ through the 9"...but I need a trans. I want to stick with a 60e and am just wondering how far I need to take it. Basically, I'm thinking something like the rpm level 5/6 or equivalent and wondering if I need a 300m output shaft. I'm running a loose circle d 3200 stall (flashes to 4200) and just wondering if it is advisable to spend the rather exorbitant $500 extra for the hardened shaft or any other extra bits. Please don't say go 80e as I am not interested in one for this car.

Dyno thread here if anyone wants to see

Are you going to launch off a transbrake?

Good question, I had not really planned on a transbrake...don't really know much about them. But I will look into it. I'm open to all recommendations.

It really depends on what you want to do with the car, if your going to use a transbrake and sticky tires I would be concerned on twisting the splines of the stock shafts over time.

The hardened output shaft is $200 and a nice piece, they also maker a billet $550 shaft from 300marging...stout!!

This is a transmission I did for my girlfriends brother, he put down 470 rwhp in a ss4000 converter 4l60e heads cam LS3 swap and a stock 10 bolt with 3.23 gears....

Stay with the 60E at 500rwhp you'll be fine, I have been running mid/low 10's for the past few years without issues(well the flexplate cracked last year, get good SFI unit!)

Don't do a transbrake...if this car can cut 1.4 60' leaving from IDLE with a 3.23 gear..well nuff said

Also look like this 60E gives 6 speed cars trouble from rolls

just wondering how often a 65/60 would need to be refreshed dead hooking 450 rwhp and is it really the best choice.

The trap speed went up 1 mph per run...for the past year the shift points were set close to 6,600 or so..The guy I work with in STL that street tunes data logged these runs and tried 6,700 shift point, then last run I think was 6,800 or maybe even 6,900...seemed to help a bit dialing it in....

dead hooking the 60e isn't the issue...its high rpm 2-3 shifts, always has been...

I have done a lot of builds similar to this black car, all going strong. I have the same build in my truck with the exception that I tried to "soften up" the feed holes in it, shifts like butter at part throttle, nice kick at WOT, if this 400hp+ nitrous 60e can live up in a lifted 4x4 TURD, then a lightweight 450hp camaro shouldn't be much issue, 2 years strong daily driving, daily streetracing...LOL 3600 stall FTW

Silverz good info.

I guess my question boils down to: given that I will use a 60 and plan to hit it as hard as I can on stickies is the hardened output shaft ('that appears to be the only difference for rpm level 5/6) worth the extra dosh, which is $500...or should I consider other specific upgrades?

...and yes, the 2-3 shift is very borderline as it sits today. I've flared through the shift and banged the limiter twice. I added one cup of fluid and the flare is gone-ish, but the shift is getting sketchier by the run.

Even my builds I like to tell the installers to run it about 1/2 qt overfull..like you just experienced, helps preload the third gear feed circuit and keeps it more primed at higher rpms...the truck pan is also a nice upgrade helping with a bit more overall fluid capacity and keeps the filter submerged

If its a BILLET shaft, then yes, nice upgrade...hardened shafts are also nice just half price then the billets..the black car above has the hardened output...the output shaft usually breaks on VERY hard 1-2 shifts...I've seen a stock shaft break at 290 rwhp due to the b&M shift kit that was installed, overlooking their instructions they remove the 1-2 acc and block it off...wow big no no...on that same car I removed that shift kit, did my own tricks, did a budget build with stock output and 2 years later went 1.39 60' leaving off idle 530 rwhp ..stock output can live at 450hp if the converter is loose and the 1-2 shift pressure is perfect, but I always recommend hardened output at 400+ and billet output at 550+ just to be more on the same side

Should give years of trouble free miles, keep the trans from overheating and you'll be fine. Talk to a few of the vendors they'll let you know what you need. The 4L60E has been perfected over the years.

I have a built stage 7 FLT trans that I want to sell! It has billet input and output shafts. This thing would be great for your application! I am going powerglide for a turbo setup and this trans won't work for what i want to do.

They are guys running a 800rwhp plus through the same trans. You wouldn't have to think about the trans again. Pm if you are interested.
