Default How many of you installed your converter without rebuilding the tranny?

Just curious..My intention was to just install the converter/cooler. But my mechanic (who is a gm trans specialist) talked me into rebuilding my tranny for obvious wear&tear reasons/accommodate more hp with cam/common failed 4l60e parts...aka sunshell 3-4clutchs ect. Didn't take alot to convince me along with some reasearch of my own. Only thing thats killing me is that their was nothing wrong with my trans (72,000miles) and now I'm in about 1300$ comparably to the oringinal 350$ for the converter/cooler.

So I was just curious to how many haven't rebuilt their trans...abuse it...and haven't had any issues with their converters, or vise-versa...those who had problems by not rebuilding their trans. I guess this will put my mind to ease considering I'm putting alot of money into something that wasn't broke. I know its for the best in the long run, but damm. Compared to must have engine upgrades for a cam swap...Theirs hardly any threads on what HAS or NEEDS to be swapped for converters. Besides a damm cooler optional shift kit.

I have a general rule of thumb when a generic non performance minded trans shop mechanic tries to tell me about running a higher stall...laugh in his face. These are the same jerks who will recommend a jasper transmission for an aftermarket performance trans

No offense to your friend.

I have more info for you in a min.

I installed my ss3600 with 92,400 miles.
Car now has 15k.
22,600 miles has been put on my car/trans with the stall.
Its a totally stock trans besides the stall.
Still drives great and if theres anything wrong with it I cant tell.
I estimate 60-70 1/4 mile passes on this stock a-4.
Endless WOT runs on street.
When this trans goes then ill upgrade to a FLT.
I wouldnt waste time or money rebuilding it.
Thats my info.

Well it's kinda too late...It's in the process righ now. Peice of mind....-1.
Something told me not too...but then theirs the thought of when it's all done something breaks and they have to take the duals off again..drop the trans, find the problem, then fix it. Thought this might "save" money in the long run.....which it still probably will. My mind set at first was to wait until something breaks though.
I guess I should've asked this about a week ago.

I posted 19 min after your post how is it too late?! HAHA!

If he had the money to upgrade to a real performance trans I would have said yes but hes talking about rebuilding the trans just for a stall.

GL with install and I hope it lasts for you

I think the rebuild is a good idea, but ONLY if the mechanic knows exactly what performance parts and mods work well together. I would ask for an exact list of what he is doing and let us review it. Especially how the 3-4 clutch will be built.

As you stated, you are paying a lot in a labor to install a new converter, and that is a good time to rebuild the trans.

BTW - Why are you installing a new converter - didn't you just put in a Revmax 4000?
(Perhaps we are confused what the time frame is here - current or after-the-fact.)

Ted.

I've listed the converter and cam ahead of time as they've been in my house until the snow has cleared. The converter is going in now...done tuesday and the cam/dyno will be the day after which I'll drop off for the week.. Rebuild parts I remember are...Banner kit...bushing kit..(basic **** for seals orings) beast sunshell...inputsprag...filter...pump...new bands....3-4clutch pack....29element forward sprag....1-2 forward...output shaft...input drum if needed..overun clutch hub...possible billet servo....common fail parts.

Just a stock 6-friction 3-4 clutch would suck.
Find out exactly how many frictions, what brand and what clearance he is aiming for.
And perhaps most importantly, is a Shiftkit or .490/.500 boost valve being installed?

http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/R74100EK.html pretty sure this is the clutch pack. I'm still in debate about the shift kit. I had my line pressure increased with a frost tune and it hits hard throught all gears. I was thinking this decision could be made after the fact since it's a easy external install..
