Question Help!!! Needle Bearings In Oil!!!

I am new to this site but was referred to help with a problem.....here it is.....

I took my car in yesterday to get the oil changed and rotors turned and just a general check up before Norwalk....

I get a phone call from my friend at the shop and he tells me I need to get back over to the shop...

My first thought is maybe I should get a new mechanic if they can't change the oil and rotors by themselves.....

So, I get to the shop and my oil plug is laying on the counter with A LOT of metal bearings stuck to the magnet.....

(P.S. This news comes one week before Norwalk and one week after an estimate for over $1500 in work that needs done on my truck)

Long story short we can't figure out exactly what's wrong till we tear the engine apart and not only that but my TA only has 40,000 miles on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So....do I let them tear the engine apart???? Has anyone else ever had this problem???? How does this happen????

I hope someone can give me some answers to these questions????

It's just your rocker arms. DO NOT TEAR DOWN YOUR MOTOR!!!

Pull the valve covers and find the rockers that died. What you found are needle bearings from the rockers.

Changed oil 3,000 miles ago.....not over burning oil....no noises......actually I am very lucky I took it in before Norwalk(race) or something really bad could have happened.

pieces are about this big ___ and pretty thin....

you should have the mechanic check for any "bulletins" for your car. i am a GM tech and if i recall, there was a "bulletin" out on our cars for that exact problem. if i'm right, you might be able to get them replaced at no cost. i would have to check at work tomorrow for sure. but check it out anyways.
