Tourqe converter bad outta box? Please help
Well its been a long hard road but I finally got enough time off of work to finish putting my rebuilt tranny back into the Tras Am and fire it up. When I started it up the first thing I heard was a LOUD clicking/clanking noise coming straight from the TC/flexplate area. Has anyone else experienced this? or know what it is? It sounds like the flex plate hitting something but I know there isn't anything in the way. Is it a bad TC? I filled it with tranny fluid before I installed it. I thought it was the Pump stator in the transmission but no noise is coming from the transmission, and I have both forward and reverse. Any input would help. the torque converter is an after market Revmax built to 3200 stall, installed into a 96 lt1.

Cracked flexplate can make strange clicking noises. If it is converter, it will usually change tones or even go away when in park vs drive. Any difference there? And like 01ssreda4 said, make sure the bolts have clearance from the block. If you are running the stock flexplate you are probably ok there.

Okay I figured it out. The torque converter was too far from the input shaft and too close to the flex plate. After rigging up a quick fix with some washers and some bolts from the hard ware I seated the TC back nice and snug and fired it up bam, no more noise. Soooo now my question is should I buy a flex plate spacer to make up for the gap or a TC spacer? I don't want to run the car with a rigged up TC like it is, I don't think the setup will hold up to alot of driving for very long.

When the converter is not bolted and pushed toward the trans, what is the gap between the converter pads and the flexplate?

Half an inch is a huge gap!
Please confirm this is an LT engine and a 4L60E trans.
Hopefully Circle-D or other expert can give you some good advice. It doesn't sound like a properly built or model converter to me.

It is measured half an inch gap yes. the transmission is a 4l60e that was just rebuilt, the converter is a after market Revmax, one thing I did notice is the stock Torque converter has little "nubs" that bridge the gap a little bit, while the after market one does not. I'll have some pictures soon

Yes the engine is a LT1 with the stock flexplate. The engine isn't stock but I cant think of anything that would affect the flexplate/rear engine bay area. The only mods are Just headers, exhaust, injectors, and thats about it.
(And before anyone asks, no I didn't add injectors thinking i would gain horsepower from an other wise bone stock setup. My stock multecs were going bad)

Looks to be a 4L60 LT style trans with the open bellhousing. And the 4L60 LS style converter is to tall, so you probably have the right style converter. With 1/2" of converter clearance something sounds way off. You could be pulling out of the crank when you add all the spacers, so the converter is not centered. I agree with the previous poster, give Revmax a call. Something is not right.

Whelp I called revmax, they said too measure the height of the converter to make sure it was the same 5.9 inchs as the stock LT1 converter. Well it is, dialed right where it needed to be on the micrometer. I really don't understand whats going on. The engine runs fine no ticks or noises so the crank hasn't moved. The Transmission bell housing is a part of the case there is NO WAY that could have changed. when the transmission was rebuilt I reused all the factory shims and thrust bearings and the the input shaft hasn't changed height and length either. simply out the gap should not be able to be there at all. what now?

It looks like you have the small diameter flexplate and the converter mounting ring maybe hitting the ring gear before it touches the flexplate.
