Have you guys ever painted a rear diffuser?
#2
Hmmm, hundreds of gen V's & Vettes on the site & nobody has painted a rear diffuser?
Was thinking of using a clear epoxy paint. The diffuser is black plastic (probably ABS) so, it doesn't need color. The epoxy would hold up better to road debris & give it a nice shine.

what car are you talking about, if it's a MX-5 (miata) in your sig I doubt there are vary many people on here with one to start with.
PLENTY of Vette owners and T/A owners do something called the CETA Mod which involves painting the area around the exhaust.

NA/NB MX-5's don't come stock w/ diffusers & the question is not related to a specific vehicle, only its' diffuser. Would like to hear from anyone who has painted a rear diffuser as to the durability of the paint.

Thanks again. It's not really something people pay much attention to. So, info. is hard to come by.

The prep work is key, Is it's not prepped right and the right chemicals applied, like the right primer and adhesion promoter, then yeah it can flake off.
Ask your local auto paint store, they'll be able to tell you the right products to use for your application.

I can understand your thoughts on the sand blasting effect, even with me living on the dirt road i would have thought that it would happen to me. So how did it turn out? Got any pictures to post?

They always made a clear coat, but that one is still a matte finish. Say you had a crazy custom color and wondered what it looked like matte, clear coat dip fills that need. Black becomes matte black, candy red becomes matte candy red, etc.
They make an after product called glossifier, spray it on dried plastidip to give a gloss finish. Site called dipyourcar has best prices, I checked and that's where I buy mine.

admittedly until about 4 months ago I had no idea what plastidip even was, saw it at lowes and used it to coat a work table in the garage, later bought a can of red to maybe use on some interior parts. Just recently became active on the board again and im noticing a lot of new stuff that wasnt availible when I visited regularly in 08-09.

I wouldn't worry about dip once cured. Many have used dip for their CETA mod (myself included). I'm on a plastidip page on facebook and there are guys doing valve covers that hold up...I don't feel like looking it up, but I'm thinking dip is good for +200°F.

Just came back in this section. Didn't realize there were so many replies...Thanks everyone.
Just finished modifying the under tray that fills the underside gap between the rear diff & the diffuser & am ready to paint the diffuser. It will match one of the two colors used on the car & is a urethane base/clear (have leftover paint from original paint job). So, Plastidip isn't an option.
Plan to use a plastic primer after scuffing the diffuser & then color & clear. Diffuser had been the stock black ABS plastic color, no paint.
Saw the request for a pic & will post one once painted (wasn't ignoring you, just hadn't yet made the undertray mods & wasn't sure whether the mods would effect the diffuser). So, was waiting to remove & paint the diffuser; is also why I started this thread early.

Oh yea she'll be pretty.
Because diffusers find lots of rocks and whatnot I suggest spraying the final product with CLEAR plastidip then coat of their glossifier to bring the shine back. That combo is essentially a clear bra type protectant without the hassle of install and much easier removal.
