Default Lunati 221/221 or TR 224/224

I whittled my cam choice down to these two for my "cam only" install. Signature has the rest of my mods. I don't mind rumble and lope but if it will not idle I cannot go there. I am trying to get as much “cam” as possible WITHOUT PCM tuning.

Lunati 221 / 221 .558 / .558 114 LSA

TR 224 / 224 .561 / .561 114 LSA

If so;
Are you happy with the idle?
Did you HAVE to get the PCM tuned?

Any info will be appreciated!

I have had both cams back in the day. Both cams drove about the same around town, but the TR224 did feel a little more responsive power wise. It's hard to compare the two on the dyno since I changed motors,etc. You can't go wrong either way, but the TR224 would definitely get my vote.

Sidestep, someone posted sound clips of both of these cams a while back, do a search. If you can't find them, I can email them to you. The 224 sounded a lot cooler if you like lope. If you like a smooth idle, the B1 (221) sounds better. The 224 should make more power, but peak at around 6600 rpm. I'm trying to make the same decisin myself . . . I think it will be the TR224 for me. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

i had to use edit for my Comp Cam XE 224 114 cam to get my idle right. With any cam you will need some tuning, but ive seen cars that are hit or miss. Some just drop a cam in and she idles FINE! Mine wouldnt idle for crap and surged like a **** <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

the B1 will require less tuning but probably make 6-10hp less across the band. The B1 would be nice cam to start with, so you could always go bigger later on <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

I did not see your sig posted.A4 or M6?

I have the TR224/224-112 in my A4.I had TR mail tune my PCM[great job]for my mods.I then used Autotap to tweak my TB.I can say my car idles great,in and out of gear and no surging.

If you are an M6 I think just working the TB will get your idle right but you want the rev limit raised some,as with any cam to take full advantage.

That's the information I was given from tech support at Comp Cams on a 224/224 duration cam with XE ramps. I believe Comp Cams is who actually makes the TR224, correct? I would like to believe what you are saying is true; that would make the TR224 better for my application. I understand that the 114 LSA version peaks 200 rpm higher than the 112 LSA version.

^ Yea and that it wasn't said 8 years ago when this thread was made is beyond me. I guess 8 years ago pcm tuning was a complicated and time consuming process.

My friend has a stock cam from a different year ls1 (98 cam in a 02 car) and it idles and drives like crap with it's current tune.

No way in hell I would put an aftermarket cam in and not get a tune.
