Which cam...need advice
Ok my Z is my daily driver so I dont want a cam that is going to eat gas, and be a pain in my ****. I am trying to decide between the ZO6/ls6 cam or the hotcam. With lt's, cats, and a tune what would I probably look at putting down with the ls6 cam. I know that the hotcam can get around 380 at the wheels. But which is better for the daily driver, a$$ kicking when needed type application I am looking for. Also what needs to be replaced with both cams...ie springs, pushrods, etc....and with what 918, 921...?
Thanks....and I cannot find any good comparison between the two with the search.

Look into a TR220 or an MTI B1 if you want a small cam.
Comp 918's would be plenty.
If you're going the GMPP route (either the LS6 or the Hotcam), '02+ LS6 springs will suffice.
PS. many people go with a small cam and then swap out to go bigger.
A TR224 will get you what you want. Better yet, go with a 228 duration cam (TSP228R comes to mind).
Heck, I'd go with the 228R since you're investing in a tune.
The new TSP225 is also a great alternative.

Im really leaning toward the ls6 cam, ls6 springs, and pushrods (dont know what kind)
The thing is I want to keep my stock ls1 heads except for springs and pushrods. And I dont want anything to outregous and the ls6 cam is only $200 from sdpc. That would only leave the springs and pushrods as I think ls1 heads need longer rods?
I cant spend too much money on this, and maybe down the road I might want somthing bigger. But for now, at least for 2 years after I do this I will be keeping it. Any other input please.
thanks

frey51,
Are you basing your conservative decision on the fact that you have stock heads?
If so, your logic is off.
With a tune, I'd go no less than a TR224 or TSP 225.
Heck, if you're gonna go the cheap route, do the Hotcam. Your torque butt-o-meter will thank you (ls6 gains are only up top over stock cam).

Yeah I was reading the last hotcam thread and realized it was a bogus route to take. I am pretty sure an ls6 cam would be more than enough for me. I dont need anything too outrageous, just enough to get me by with tormenting ricers, and putting down pretty decent track times. It is just a cheap & reliable way to go and that is what I am looking for right now.
So with the ls6 cam, which is what I am 90% sure I am going with, what do I need to replace in my heads (02 ls1) and with what?
Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.

When you're not feeling any newfound power till 4k rpms, you'll remember me.
All you need is LS6 springs and many people debated over pushrod length with the LS6 cam. Otherwise, I'd say don't even bother with pushrods (7.4 being stock). No need for hardened pushrods with the ls6 cam.

so I can get the same gas mileage, with better gains accross the powerband? Ok. I was looking at the specs and they are similar to each other. Which is the better of the two. Whats the difference b/t the tsp 224 and 224R, and what would be better a 112 or 114? I like tsp because from what I have heard they are great with mail order tuning, and their numbers seem to be better. What would be better for my application, the tsp or tr?

If the mail order tune interests you, get the cam from TSP and ship them your PCM while the car is down for the swap.
Just a note, the 224R and the 225 have higher lift than the standard TSP224.
.58x vs. .56x
The TR224 is also on a .56x lift, yet has aggressive lobes for great power under the curve.
No harm in calling both TSP and Thunder to tell them you needs. They'll pair you up with what you want.
Good luck!
