Default How on earth do you M6 guys launch without going up in a TON of smoke?!?!?!

No matter how hard I try I always fry the tires(GSC's with good tread) from a dead stop with my M6 on the streets. Usually, I'll just tach it up to about 1500-2000rpms, release the clutch, and immediately floor it. But all I do is leave a huge patch that causes me to have to let off after about 10-15 feet or so. The sqealing and smoke is fun yet very frustrating. Man...do I miss the simplicity of launching my old A4. Keep in mind I bought this car back in early July without even knowing how to drive a manual transmission car. So it took me a while to get the hang of it but as you see I'm still very much learning. Any helpful tips would be appreciated since it is almost impossible to get the proper feel for this.

Thanks,

Mike

Just make sure you have traction and ease into the throttle. In these cars you cant slam the peddle to the floor because no matter what you drive they will spin. BTW what part of ILL are you from. Im up near gurnee.

Your first problem is the tires. GS-C's are quite possibly the hardest tire on the planet, except maybe for DRK-SYD's Sumitumo's.....

Seriously, get some softer tires first and your launch capability will improve. If you can't get some better tires then you will have to learn how to "ride" the clutch out of the hole, prolly all the way to 2nd gear with those GS-C's . It is quite an art I must say, but when done perfectly feels like sex with your car! Whatever you do when applying the power, you wanna keep the tires right on the verge of spinning by balancing between slipping the clutch and fully engaging it.

The only way to get good at it is practice, over, and over, and over..... at the track is good to, lets you see your 60' times.

FYI, a really good (realistic) 60' time on the GS-C's would be in the 1.90 range. On DR's you should expect them to godown to some low 1.80's to the 1.70's (if you get really good)!

sited12...I live in the Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg area. About 10 minutes away from Speed Inc.

Titanium...good advice. Your right, launching a manual powered car is more about the "feel" than anything. I definitely need to finesse it more out of the hole. Sorry, haven't been to the track yet. But thats coming next spring since everything else is going good. BTW, what exactly do you mean by slipping vs fully engaging(dumping?) the clutch and which way would be the best for launching? My M6 terminology is still cloudy.

Honestly, right now I'm just not working the clutch properly. I'll either just spin horrendously after going full throttle or I'll bog or jerk the car if I don't rev up high enough or get into the throttle correctly. I guess thats where getting the right feel for this plays in. Tire pressure in the rear GSC's is about 32psi(probably too high) and I still have the stock 3.42's.

Thanks guys.

It is really simple to understand, but very difficult to actualy do consistently, for most people. Which is why I love racing on the street, most people can't drive very well.... I am not referring to you. You just need some practice. What I meant was, if it is bogging on you then you let the clutch out too fast with the revs too low. If it is going up in smoke then you let the clutch out too fast with the revs too high. The fine line is when you let the clutch out just the right amount with the revs just high enough to have the tires right on the verge of spinning, but not actually spinning, kinda singin too you....

very carefully is how i launch, haha actually just get a lot of practice, i usually rev the motor just a little and then i let the clutch out fast, but not really a dump, while i roll into the gas, this has given me some really good launches on both the gsc, and the re730's i have now.

this is what i do. first i know my car,i pull the rpm's up to 2,100 with the tires real HOT.i then pull the clutch up to the pointe it just starts to pull the car.this next part took some time, i then give the clutch & gas what i call a 2 bounce
i bounce the clutch up and the gas to the floor.the car don't spin or bog too much it hooks and goes pretty good.this may be hard to understand but it works for me,i was getting 1.98-2.0 60's on stock tires and 1.71's on nittos. i'm always looking for advice to get better myself. goodluck to ya.

my car is bone stock with a set of falcon radials but this works best for me. bring it up to about 2400-2500. then drop the clutch but dont floor the gas. keep the gas in the same position, then when it hooks usually about 10-15 ft. for me, let it have it!
