How much power can the LS1 handle?
I am building a LS1 and looking to turbo it. Has anyone done this and what kinda of Dyno #'s were made. I am installing it in a 94 Mazda RX7, I know of people running mid 9's with 570 RWH. But for me that is just not going to cut it. I came from the imports (my youth was always around SBC's) it is nothing to make 500 WHP from a honda. So this is where I get confused, 346 CI should be able to make 1000 HP??? But it can't I know the crank and the caps just cannt handle the power. I am looking to end up around the 7-900 RWH mark. Is this feasable? Or am I going to be close to the line of having to make the jump to a dart block? Any help would be great, and if anyone has a turbo on there LS block please give me any advice you have.

Y2KHawks aluminum 346, stock crank appr. 900rwhp. W2W just made 1580fwhp on an iron block (bored/stroked) and there is a 382 Formula at 1180fwhp (not sure if its iron are alum). All turbos, so they can hold together pretty well.

Pretty good for his first post sayin its easy to take a Honda to 500 hp. and hes already putting an LS1 into his RX7 what have kids come up with these days.

Harlan very recently nailed a 157 MPH 1/4 mile pass in his heavy *** car. It has the stock crank and caps.
"Nothing" to make a 500 RWHP Honda....<snicker> Good one.

With those Hondas, you also have to consider the RPM at which you're seeing that 500 hp... per the formula for HP, it doesn't take a whole lot of torque to make a lot of HP if you're twisting the hell out of the motor.
For instance, take 400 ft/lb... a figure that is fairly easily achievable on a heads/cam stock short block LS1:
1) For this example, let's say that you make that 400 ft/lb at, say, 4500 RPM. Since HP = (TQ * RPM)/5252, we see that 400 ft/lb at 4500 RPM equals 342 HP.
2) For this example, let's say that that same 400 ft/lb occurs at 6500 RPM... the result is 495 HP.
Just remember that V8's don't have to be turned that tight (8000+ RPM) in order to make power... especially when force-fed. Massive amounts of torque at lower RPM may not impress your friends at the dyno with a stupendous HP number, but you'll leave 'em in the dust when it comes time to lay the hammer down on the road.

Honda power
I do some Honda work at times so I am familiar with the power one can get out of these engines. Not only the Honda engines but really any of the small four valve engines including the GM Ecotec.
Any of the Honda series of engines have very good flowing heads for their displacement. Add a MID sleeved block, turbo, tuning, the usual hop up parts, good intercooler and you have 500 reliable street horsepower from the H series 2.2 liter engines. This with the stock two bolt caps and bolts on the block. In fact the little Honda B series race engine below used the stock factory caps, bolts, and crankshaft.
The attached graph is from a friend's race car running methanol on 25 lbs. boost. This is a 1600 cc engine (B16A), 97 cubic inches. This dyno run was in Denver by the way. Peak wheel torque 574 ft./ lbs. @ right around 6,500 rpm. Power was still increasing when they stopped the pull, 775 HP @ 8,300 rpm.
I should point out that this engine was no world beater, basically stock heads. I know another fellow that pulled just about 1,000 HP out of his 1600 Honda. You can make a lot of power with 35 - 40 lbs of boost.
The Ford Cobra has been built to right around 1,700 HP on methanol and turbo. Bottom end on that block, the whole block in fact, is a joke compared to the LS1 block. An LS1 properly built and tuned should exceed that number by a good margin.

The fact remains that these little Goblins can't make **** for tork down low. There is always the weight factor.
When was the last time you got a Challenge from a 500 hp Honda from a dig?/
That's because by the time they get to "boost levels" we are 3 car lengths ahead and the race is over.

I love this idea that the ricers have that they can make 500 or, the more common, 750 hp "easily" with a 4 banger. Ya sure they can put out 500+ Hp with 40lbs of boost of a 250 shot of NAWS for like a month and then the engine kicks the bucket.
Torque rules period.
With an LS1 in a little RX7, you'll be able to use the nice tall factory gearing since there's so much torque and as the 500 hp honda your racing is shifting into 3rd gear at 50 mph and running out of steam, you'll be just getting into 2nd and pulling like a ****.

I've yet to see a 500 RWHP, streetable 4 cylinder car on pump gas. However, 500 RWHP with a LS1 on pump gas is no big deal at all these days....even naturally aspirated. I'll leave it at that.

I've seen a couple honda's do some pretty amazing things. There's a couple here in Houston that are especially crazy. I'm talking about street Hondas trapping at 130+. That's impressive for a 4 cylinder car. Cheesefrog (Local Honda Hero) says the goal for his new setup is to trap 150 MPH in a full interior street car. Wonder if he'll make that...
