LS1 Bare Block for $300, Good Price?
I found an LS1 bare block removed from a 2000 Corvette with about 40K miles on it. There are no problems with the block whatsoever. For $300, the engine comes with mains and main bolt set. Is this a good price?
There is one thing that I know nothing about. He said that he made a modification to it for the LS6 valley pan to the block. He said that he had a LS6 valley pan that he would throw in with the block for $30.00. I don't even know what a valley pan is, to tell you the truth.
I am wanting to buy the block and send it to MTI or somewhere to have them resleeve it with Darton's MID sleeve kit (http://www.darton-international.com/kit_sale.htm).
What do you all think?

that is a pretty good price as long as the block is in good condition. the modification he is talking about is; to put the LS6 valley pan on some of the LS1 blocks there is a casting bose that needs to be cut out to allow the different design of the LS6 valley pan to sit flush againstthe block.
the valley pan is the part that covers the area on the top side of the engine between the cylinder heads and under the intake manifold.

nah, the LS6 intake works with both LS1 and LS6 valley covers
the LS6 valley cover is supposed to be a better way to vent the crankcase, as opposed to the typical LS1 PCV setup

That is a good price!! If that doesn't work out or if anyone else is looking we have LS1 blocks that only have test/dyno time on them & We will sell them for $650.00. The blocks still look new and there is not one thing wrong with them!!

Funny you should post a reply to me, KJ@SDPC... I was thinking about getting the block to send to you along with a Darton MID sleeve kit. But, I have decided that there is just no way that I can afford a short block, even at your sale price ($6,999 for 427). I only make $9/hr, and could never save up $7000. I was fooling myself.
It wasn't that I was looking for the cheapest route to that level ( I would probably go with an LS2 based 408 if I were), it was just that I wanted a 427, plain and smiple. I'll just stick to heads, cam, headers and bolt-ons like the masses and be content.

Some stuff was more expensive back then. I remember I bought some new LS6 heads and had the old MTI port then for an ungodly amount of money. I can't believe that I was willing to spend that much.
Originally had a milder MTI cam and it trapped 119-120. Added an aggressive LG motorsports cam and it would trap 122,with a best of 123.6. At the time, that was pretty fast. I think it dyno'd 441 versus 415-420ish with the old cam. I think I added a 92mm fast too.
