Default What to do...stock rear @ 18k w/ 400hp & traction?

I'm needing some advice from you guys. I'm building up my M6 car from H/C to suspension. Some key points to make my rear-end decision....

-400rwhp NA (small cam w/ LS6 heads)
-Car will have a wet kit by the end of summer
-Weekend warrior w/ occasional track vists
-Will use drag radials (M/Ts) & full suspension, so it will hook
-Currently on stock 3.42s but will go to 3.73s
-Only 18k miles on the car

Several of the suspension and driveline parts need to be ordered for a specific rear-end. My question is...would you guys go ahead and buy gears, driveshaft, etc for the 10-bolt and get my use out of it or get the 12-bolt right off the bat? Thanks for any input.

If I was ya I would get the 12 bolt and sell the 10 bolt while it is good! 400hp M6 and NOS, GO BOOM! A good investment$$$$$$$

A friend of mine broke his rear 2 weaks after his h/c swap.2002 hawk 430 rwhp on the street the said part is it put him in to the curb and broke 2 rims. I would go with the rear end first in a m6.

Drag radials may make it hook, but if the hook turns to
hop that's when you break stuff. That can happen with a
change of the weather. So my vote's for heavier iron,
while there's some value left in the 10-bolt and some
time to kill. With the power+adder you plan, an M6 and
sticky tires you know the pain is inevitable.

Of course people break 12-bolts too....

Spend the money and get the rearend. That's what I working on doing right now because I can just see it ( THe tree drop, the light is green and I hit it hard. BOOM the car spit the gears out the back like bad food. Time to call a tow truck ). I got my fingers crossed until I come up with the loot.

Under what cirsumstances should I bump up to a 9" from a 12-bolt? Do I really need the extra strength?

Would you still opt for the 9" if the car will see a lot of street use? This will not be a frequent track car, just a few visits per season. Most of its action will be done on the street on DR's. Keeping the posi seems like the way to go for street/strip mix. I've never driven a car with a spool, but from what I've heard, it takes way too much streetability from the car.

Yes.

Shipping for the 12 bolt is around 250-350
Shipping on my 9" was almost 100.

It just makes more sence to me to invest more money in the rear then UPS.

I streeted a spool every day. Most of the people that rode in my car (mostly girls) never knew it was there. Everyone has their own opinion thats why I advise you to find someone with a spool and go for a ride. Alot depends on the tires also. Out of all the people that rode in my car, not ONE said it wasnt streetable. They arent that bad.

I street the exact 9" rear end Justin(2Much) is talking about(it was the one in his SS). Its my daily driver, and its not that bad. Sure it takes a little gettings used to, and its a little tempermental, but its no worse than a stage 3 clutch. combine both of them together and its a fun car to drive it just takes some convincing in parking garages from time to time, and when you want to take slow sharp turns.

When launching off the line, can you feel the difference between a posi and spool? I'd assume running a spool behind an M6 would be a lot more noticeable than an auto.

HELL YES YOU CAN.

I remember one of the first times I hit my posi from a dead stop. Here comes my rear end swinging around. Good thing there was no one around.

The first time I hit the spool from a dead stop it just went. I didnt have to worry about letting off any. It was all throttle.

What's the weight difference and drivetrain loss between the two (12bolt vs 9")? I'm leaning towards the 9" spool....btw

Depends on your 3rd members differential. With a spool it will be minimal. Usually about 10-15 hp. With a locker or posi it will be more.
