Default Fuel octane

I added 2 gallons of 110 racing fuel to 3 gallons of 94 Sunoco
for test n tune this week.
And this is about the 3rd time in the last year I've done this and every time
my car slows down.
Is this because I've not been tuned to high octane?

I believe LSONE stated that race gas has lead in it and that could be the reason why this is happening..


typically when people run higher octane they're way of tuning for it would be to "bump" the timing

when I was doing mustangs I believe the rule of thumb was for every point of timing advanced it was 1hp..

i don't think this is universally true for LS1s, at all.

Well, as far as timing I'm already at 29.5 deg at WOT
I need a full tune sooo freakin bad. I know my car is
capable of alot more than she shows now.

I hope you are not adding leaded to unleaded gas?

You could just run 93 octane u/l with your setup.

Like the others have said, leaded race fle will contaminate your o2s and kill your cats if you have em.

Also, higher octane fuel is actually less explosive than a lower octane. The only reason its used in more powerful cars is because the gains from running higher compression or more boost far outweigh the comparitively small loss in combustability. No need to run anything but 93.

Fuel octane is a rating of the resistance to pre-ignition or detonation. Unless you're having problems along those lines, you don't need higher octane gas.

In fact, higher octane gas will require more ignition timing (advanced timing) because the fuel is harder to get light and burns slower.

Use the least octane that your engine will safely run on. This will depend upon application (stock motor will have different needs than a 14:1 race motor or a twin turbo'd monster with 25lbs of boost).

do not run race gas unless you have lead resistant O2's, and even then they can still crap out on you if you use it too frequently.

I don't know if it is leaded fuel or not. But, I think ya'll is right that it isn't doing me any good.
I got the car out at lunch and under WOT I'm get 3.5 deg
of KR and 26.7 deg timing.
Usually I get 0 KR at 29-29.5 deg timing.
I must have leaned it out too much at Test n tune.

My car runs noticably better on 93 octane then 94 -,at least before the tune it did. The 94 could be old though, according to the guy that tuned my car. He recommended BP 93 all day every day w/ 11.3:1 compression. Anyway It was a noticable difference. I am tuned @ 28.5 deg timing btw.

110 would be leaded, 104 is the highest unleaded race gas.
