6.5 quarts?
Ok i finally switched to the bigger K&N filter. This is what is weird. It took 6 1/2 quarts to fill Its overfull if the car sits but once it runs a few seconds and you check it, its just right, maybe even a hair over. Is the normal?

well stock it takes 5.5, so i figure the larger filter holds maybe a half more, so 6 should do it, what we do at work is, put as much oil as its supposed to take in and start the car, wait for the pressure to come up to normal or if no gauge wait about 5 seconds after the oil light goes off, turn the car off, check the stick, the stick dont lie, if after doing that the stick is at full, you should be fine

Stock takes 5.5 quarts? I only put 5 quarts in mine for an oil/filter change (gc 0w30+k&n filter) and it's right on the full mark every time. Weird.

i usually only put in 5 in mine (k&n + 5w-30 mobil 1), but we have a oil capacity book at work and the other day i just looked it up, it said 5.5 quarts, which kinda makes sence, every time i check mine with 5 in it, its in the cross-hash area but never at the full line

Patman, doesn't the Corvette have a different oil pan? Does your overfill, then, still relate to the F body capacity? Are they different?
Wouldn't an affecting overfill manifest itself by foam on the dipstick after a run? Isn't foam from an overfill a bad thing, to be avoided like the plague?
And lastly, shouldn't oil be checked after the engine is shut off and the oil had time to drain back in the pan?

It is true, the Corvette's oil pan is completely different than the f-body, but both of them will still handle one quart over with no problems whatsoever.
As far as checking the oil, it's best to do it when cold so the oil has had time to drain back, especially on the Vette.

Here's a question? Why is there a max fill line if we can put more oil than recommended? Also, isn't it safe to run anywhere between the min and max fill line? I always thought being a little below the max fill was safe.

im not too sure what the down-side to over filling is, tho i have heard you can blow out seals
however in road racing, your in higher RPMs and in high speed turns, the oil moves around in the pan, over-filling reduces the likelyhood of starving your motor of oil
ive always grown up being told that anywhere in the cross-hatched area is acceptable, closer to full the better, the other day i checked it and it was a little low, i but my Mobil 1 in a box of 6 quarts so i had one extra bottle, put in half, back at the full mark

here's something to think about if your going to overfill.
Carcraft mag. sept 05 "blueprint any Eng. at home" . article: increase peak power through oil control . a simple test on the dyno at Westech Performance Group where chief dyno wrangler Steve Brule' pulled 1 1/2 qt's of oil out of a big block chevy (572ci) boat pan and not only improved the oil pressure at peak rpm by as much as 15 psi, but also gained an amazing 14 "free" horse power.
when oil level is to high, it creates a condition called windage where oil is whipped up by the spinning crankshaft, which not only costs horsepower but also aerates or foams the oil.
every case is different so be careful when lowering oil level. dont do it if u dont know what u r doing.
the goal here is to make the engine more efficient by improving oil pressure by reducing aeration while also potentially increasing power.

This is exactly what I do. Oil level does drop a bit once it gets spread throughout the block. I use all 6 quarts.
Does anybody have a P/N for the bigger K&N oil filter?
