Default Biggest cam on LT1?

A friend of mine has an LT1 with a 305 cam, 1.6rr, hooker headers, 3000 stall, 3.73's and just about all the regular bolt-on stuff. He wants to make an upgrade on the cam and he was thinking of a 306 or maybe something bigger. What is the biggest cam you can put on an LT1 with out fly-cutting the pistons? Driveability won't be a concern since its only a strip and street weekend warrior.

I know some people have ran the GM847 cam with stock heads and stock bottom end. A CC306 should be fine.

you can get into some grinds just above .600 in lift befor you have to worry about cutting pistons....that is assuming his heads and block haven't been touched...if that's the case....a cam that big wouldn't be benificial untill he did some headwork too

If driveability isnt a issue have someone make you a custom cam to meet the needs of the driver.... if your looking for a off the shelf grind then the most people will say go is the GM847 234/242 .576/.595 with 1.6 rockers

what are you talking about? every other thread is about what heads and cam should i run.

i have 600 lift, and when i have plenty of piston to valve clearence. my heads have been milled.

just dont exspect to go fast if all your wanting to do is throw the biggest cam in... probably wont gain much if anything over the 305 going bigger unless you get heads.

There are a few that actually run .611/.632 lift with the GM847 & 1.7rrs, PTV clearances were nominal and on the dyno averaging 320-340 dependent on the rest of their bolt-ons, longtubes, 58mm TB, etc, etc. I ran the 847 for a year with 1.7rrs pushing the lift above and it was streetable, and I swapped for 1.6rrs to take a little stress of the drivetrain geometry, but I still with all my boltons had over 340rwhp to the ground. So cams like the 306, 847 & the right boltons will definitely net over 305 as you say.

I agree cam/heads/intake are the key boltons for "reasonable" priced power but he's asking about cams.

you actually just proved my point... i dynoed over 340 with the hot cam, and basic bolt ons.
and thats pretty common for the hot cam and similar.

My bad, the 847 Cam got me to right around 335 - 340 with the boltons I had, stock 1.5 stamped rockers with 99893 crane springs (they wouldn't stay tight ), I upgraded a couple weeks later with 1.7 Comp ProMag Stainless RRs with better springs, CompRs, 1pc pushrods, guides and PCM tuning, this got me to around 350-355 with the better valvetrain components.

i was putting down 335 rwhp with just boltons so i would hope you were over 350-360 with a cam.

im running an fms cam. 233/241 573/597. you can get away with quite a bit of lift since our pistons are in the cyclinders a little ways.

if he wants to make power he should look into a custom cam. the "off the shelf" cams will only take you so far.

Wow that seem like a lot for just bolt ons. What specifically did you have?

If your gonna run stock heads a 847 isn't gonna make much more then a much smaller cam. You need some head work for the 847 to really shine... If your going cam only I say go smaller...Just my 2 cents...

Slowmo your right to a point, cams like the 847, 306, etc will of course shine with some headwork, but even on stock heads, right valvetrain to match and tuning these class of cams on stock heads do a helluva lot more than a "much smaller cam" as you put it.

MeanGreen your may try some research on camaroz28.com as well if you haven't already, quite a bit of info on several cams on stock heads of this spec.
