Default Mercedes vs LS1 torque ... why so high

Looking at the Mercedes website (to see what the AMG's are making these days), it shows the CL55 AMG making making 493 BHP and the torque numbers are 590 @1,800-3,500. Why is the torque SOOO much higher????

I'm asking because something is not right with those numbers, is it? My Trans Am is an A4. Using the 15% rule for powertrain loss, my car makes over 460 RWHP ... translating roughly about 525+ bhp. But, the torque is only barely over 400 at a much higher rpm. Are the torque numbers at lower rpm's the reason the CL55 AMG torque numbers are so high? About what would they be at 6,000 rpm?

Will this guy walk me in the 1/4 mile and 0-60?

The CL55 AMG has a blower on it! Forced induction gives lots more power and torque for the same displacement. Add a blower to your car and even the score...it only takes cubic dollars.

Even still, that's a ridiculous amount of low end torque. That's sounds like the kind of number you'd get from a diesel.

Transmission that shifts in .03 seconds
One more gear (Soon they will going to an eight speed auto)
DOHC
Lycom (twin screw)
Very high quality motor
If they ever make a TT 3,000 lb supercar it will move.

With a 4300lb curb weight, it needs all the torque it can get.

The answer is simple: Technology. They research and produce. There is a lot of money put into R&D and the price of the vehicles show it. Personally, I think the cars are worth every cent of their cost.

Hey, I retired from 1st Cav ... was the DIVARTY Commo Chief for several years ... Apache Training Brigade Commo Chief for 2 years too ... also spent my first 3 Army years in Germany, as well ... commo guy in the Field Artillery ... small world!

Didn't realize they were that heavy ... thought my pigiron weighed in a lot! 12 cylinders prob doesn't help a lot.

like everyone has said it is the roots blower...lots of low end torque. I have an 4.6 litre cobra with a kenne bell blower and it has as much torque as the mercedes. Makes the car harder to drag race because all the torque causes lots of wheelspin at low speeds.

my best friend recently leased an 06 e55 amg. we haven't raced head to head yet but i've driven his car. from a roll it pulls MUCH harder than my car (my mods in sig). car and driver pulled a 12.39 at 116 stock and over at dragtimes.com there are several stock ones in the low 12's and even one in the 11's! these cars are no joke. torque peaks at 2600rpm and holds all the way to 5000 plus rpm where it finally starts to drop.

fwiw his lease payment is $1,500 monthly for 36 months. he also said it makes his g5x3 cam only SS feel like a dog cruising around town.

Only thing in the Mercedes line that I think will murder me is the SLR McClaren (for sure). SL600 Roadster (maybe), CL 600 Coupe (maybe), x65 AMG series (major trouble ... may need to plan my death for these guys).

Once my nitrous setup goes on ... don't think there's anything to worry about ... just too bad I'll have to once again change up injectors and fuel pump. By the time I end up spending more on my F-Body, I could have one of those Supercharged Mercedes (for cryin' out loud!) Oh well, I think my F-Body is more fun, anyway.

If you think thats a lot of torque check out the SL600. They have a twin turbo V-12 and it makes over 700 ft-lbs at a ridiculously low RPM. If you could shove that motor into a lighter car (SLK!!!) .....Holy ****!
