Default H/C, boltons, 3800 stall = bad news for 4l60e

Ok guys, just got my car together after the big install list in my sig. Put an ok tune on it just to be able to drive it on Saturday. Well, I took it out that night and it runs faster on the motor now, then what it used to on 150 shot of juice. Anyways, I went down to the gas station and turned around and then 3rd and 4th went out . I wasn't even getting on it at the time, just pulled out real easy. Well now that you know what happened, I am trying to figure out what tranny to go with. With the nitrous, I should be around 600 rwhp, so I need something to handle that kind of hp. I've been looking at the FLP stage 5 4L60E, but I was wondering what everyone else is running or recommends.

Thanks

I second this poll, im in the same situation. lots of parts to go on but dont know what tranny to go with. I dont wanna go with the hassle of changing all the bellshousing, crossmember, driveshaft for the 400 or 350, but i hear people are having reliability issues with their 4l60e's what do we do?

common swaps are either a th400 or a 350. Also, if you want an od, yu can swap for a 4l80e and be done with it.

A th400 will practically be indestructable when built right. It has been a proven performer since the original muscle car days and it still hols it own today. The same goes for the 350, however, it was designed with lighter internals thus it would give a bit more than the th400, though the 400 is heavier.

A 4l80e is basically a th400 with an o/d gear. It is built to lug around 5k plus trucks around so its heavy duty. Also, when its built, it will be a indestructable as the th400. Parish's silverado has FLT 4l80e and he runs a 408 turbo 1000rwhp/rwtrq. However, it is heavier than your 4l60e, it will require a new wiring harness, a compatible tune an di believe you might also need to apply a new crossmember and driveshaft. (not 100% though)

First gear in the 4l80e and the th400 are not as agressive as in the 4l60e. So you should expect a completely different driving experience. However, the way i see it, it shouldnt be that bad at all. You can use that ss3800 stall with the 4l80e but not with the th400. The shift linkeage will need to e modified in both applications as well.

Now, the 4l60e isnt as bad as it is painted. Many have been built to take the punishment and some have survived. The issues is the reliability. In stock trim, they cn be fine. When built, 500-550 crank hp, no nitrous is what they can take IMO. They have their limitations. I have gone through a few to know that even teh best built can take the abuse we throw at them. You can't wot shift into o/d, spraying through the gears is not recommended and keep an ee on their temps becuz they will heat up and suffer from low oil pressure. (Well, just about any trans can suffer from this...)

If you wish, contact the sponsors or maybe a few local builders. IT is good to find one close if you are looking for a 4l60e trans. All of the swaps will require some modifications so dont e discouraged....

I will most likely e getting a DIRTY built 4l80e. Hae big plans for next year race season and i want to be ready. The gears wont hit as hard froma stop, it might be heavier, BUT, i can WOT shift into o/d, spray through the gears an pretty much install it an forget about it!! OH, yeah, becuz i like cruising in my vert and need a comfortable o/d gear.

good luck!!

I've got h/c boltons and a 3800 stall just like you and some, I also broke my my tranny. I called dave from rock-on transmission after doing some research and ordered a built 4l60e. I told him i found him through this site and right off the back he offered free shipping.
He goes into a alot of detail about the tranny's he build's without you askin. It took him about 7-10 days to build my tranny. overall he's had the best customer service out of all the sponsor's i've talked to, and ive ordered alot of parts from these sponsors. i think i paid somewhere around 1895 shipped for my built tranny.
