Default What exactly is a dyno queen?

You hear about supras & lightnings being dyno queens, but What exactly is a dyno queen?
If these cars have traction at the track, what makes them not produce the same ET's at the track as somthing else with the same power & weight?
There's gotta be more to it than "dyno queen".

They also produce alot of their power at a high RPM and very narrow power-band. You would need a Powerglide and a Very high stalled converter to make use of the power.

The lightning also has much more weight to move plus the areodynamics of the trauck are much more resistant then a car. Think of trying to drive a brick thru the air. (well, not that bad, but kind of close)

Supra's? Not too sure. I do know they have a very narrow power-band when they are producing 1000+ hp. So it may be gearing or traction issues.

When judging these car at the track, see what the Trap speed is. That will be a good indicator of the power the vehicle is producing. ET depends on alot of varibles.

Eh, so it's a dyno queen with nearly 1400rwhp and a powerband of 7k-9k, but in a 3500lbs Supra it pulls an 8.6x@170.

the above dyno graph is the example of a dyno queen, expensive to make the power that it does, the tranny's on those supras run 10k+, your looking at a 80k dyno queen, it isnt driven in the rain, sits on the back of a trailor pulled by a truck so people can rub a nut out on it like they were in a circle jerk. LPE cars are the best examples of dyno queen's, 150k car that you will never see on the streets and very rarely at any track. unless its a special event or promo type thing.

what he said....or worse than that in some cases. why would you wanna have a badass car when you dont even drive it, i dont get it... cars that just sit there and only go out every blue moon just tell me they're scared it might brake something...or they're just wayyy too picky about dirtying their cars or their HRE' wheels or something lol just my .02

Ryan drives that car around all the time on the streets and the tranny does NOT cost 10k+ because he uses the bone stock V160 six speed with a Tilton clutch.

Also the power band starts at about 5500 rpm.

a lightning is way heavier than a camaro. like over 1,000 lbs heavier.

a dyno queen is any vehicle that is rigged to make maximum HP & TQ on the dyno yet not setup to take advantage of this power at the track. this can pertain to any vehicle, motorcyles and trucks included

my definition of a dyno queen is a car that makes great hp on a dyno but either HASNT(read:hasnt been to the track) or CANT(read:doesnt run the # at the track when he does go) run what the car theoretically, based off weight & hp, should run.

Don't forget the cars with the dyno-only tune that will detonate the motor apart on the street.

That Supra is a full weight stock IRS stock Suspension 6 speed driven mid 8 second car... Its hardly a dyno queen given the times it runs and the class that surounding competitors (vipers, corvettes) are in...

Supras were considered dyno queens because they had all this power, but never had the tire to go anywhere. Mainly everyone always heard about this and that Supra making 800hp but only running 11's and 12's @ well beyond 140. Thats because they where always running 17" drag radials with no sidewall. Now that they can run 16" et streets and other "slicks" they get traction and go. Ryan Woon(WOTM Supra) recently built his first Auto drag car and drove it to 8.5 something... Sound Performance (of Chicago) built Marko's(infamous "white supra") full weight Supra and it went 8.4 something that dynoed 1320rwhp & 1520rwhp, then he turned around and built another one that dyno'ed 1200rwhp and it went 8.6 and recently dyno'ed 1300rwhp...

A dyno queen to me is someone who dyno's their car and never races it but predicts what it will run if they ever did run it...

In there lies the problem...They are totally diffrent classes... IRS vs. Solid Axle (Not to mention gear setups for 1/4 mile racing)... 6 Speed vs Auto... Weight vs Weight... Drag suspension vs Stock Suspension...

Someone who has say 700 RWHP, but never runs it, street or strip, and when people are boasting about time slips he throws in something about 700 RWHP instead.

So if I bring out a honda that has 105fwhp but never take it to the track its a dyno queen. I think that you ment a car that dynos high but never runs the car.
