Regretably, another "tick-tick" question
I've researched and never found an answer to my question, so am bringing it up here for consideration:
- When a tick-tick noise (lifter?) goes away after warmup, do I need to worry about it - or is it fairly typical of a LS1 engine, and no harm will come if I do nothing about it??
I have a stock 2002 Z-28 automatic with 34k miles, and the car is perfect in all other ways. And I'm willing to have the lifter or whatever fixed, if it's necessary, i.e., will cause later, perhaps bigger engine problems.
I don't believe it ticked when I bought it 3 weeks ago, but when I changed the oil (Mobil 1) and filter last week, the tick noise started, but it always stops after warmup. A friend told me that it could be a bit of foreign material from the bottom of the pan that got into the lifter after the oil change. And that the tick will probably go away within the next couple hundred miles.
I'm not experienced or skilled enough to make a judgment about this situation, so am hopeful you guys have some opinions. The dealer's service writer advised me that a cold tick is normal for Z-28s - and there's nothing to be worried about.

a tick and a slap are 2 different sounds.
You can hear the slap here...click here
A ticking sound would be more like a rocker hitting the valve and going away after warm up. Mine does this only when it is cold and all the oil is at the bottom of the pan.

I've never heard it as bad as that clip on that site... Whoever put those decals on that truck is over-exaggerating it... I'd feel stupid driving around with that **** on my windows

I've read, perhaps in this forum, that the LS1 oilpan will take 6 quarts, maybe even 6.5 quarts without over-pressurizing the system, or causing an overflow condition.
Could the additional oil minimize or greatly eliminate a lifter tick?
Or, does a cold tick go away after warmup strictly because the oil is hot?

OIl Filter
I just changed my oil and was using amsoil ,oil 10-30 and filter (SDF32 )
This last change i used AMSOIL and a NAPA gold filter.
I have never heard this piston slap on warmup
I hear it now with the NAPA gold filter.
WHEN i CHANGE IT IN THE FALL i'LL PUT THE amsoil FILTER BACK ON!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe AMSOIL has better cold flow than the rest

Mine "ticks" on cold start ups, ONLY between 190* and 200ish* after the engine completely warms, and even before the 190* mark there isn't a noise to be heard. my tick is coming from somewhere in the valvetrain, i assume yours is also?

im not an expert by an means..i lurk..but it could be the oil..the lifter ticks because of the thinning oil and the pressure is off..and it makes a ticking noise..the mobil oil thins out..its nothing to worry about..atleast thats what i read..like i said im just a reader..so my info could be wrong ill look for the thread though..
