Default Thermostat choice...

Ok.. i got my radiator in.. works great...

I have no thermostat... had to take it out the get all the air pockets out of the block... I let it heat to 210 and then took it down the road... and i watched the needle drop to 185 and then slow creep down to 160 as im driving down the road... and that was with no fans on... So this baby is really cooling!

But im curious... since it keepos the motor so cool... if i put a 160 degree thermostat in... it will run at 160 cruising down the road no mater what.

My question is.. well is 160 degrees TOO cool? Or would the 180 be a better choice because it would keep it at least at 180?

that looks good. is the radiator still behind the air damn?

thats pretty crazy its running that cool, i've noticed mine runs better when its at its normal operating tempeture 180-195

i've read that the sbc likes to be around 200... but not sure if that includes the lt1... since its revers cooled.

Yes it is still behind the air damn... cools realy well...

As for what temp to run at... i heard for every degree over 160 you lose hp.... but im not sure if that is proven or not... and also not sure if that is good on the motor...

Can anyone tell me what thermostat to run?

mine has a trans cooler so it was about $285... but the standard radiator... it is pretty cheap...

GRI-1-25241-X Radiator, Universal, Crossflow, Aluminum, 27.5 in. Wide, 15.5 in. High, 3.0 in. Thick, Each $189.95

the rest of the money i spent doing it was on some metal... coolant.. water... and hoses...

I had to "T" in a few things to the drain hose.... If you call Griffin they will build ya one exactly how you need it though.. I just wasn't thinking about it at the time. So I ordered it the way it came.. and made it work,... and boy does it work.. lol

ok i'll get pics out to you a lil later...

as for fans im going to buy a aftermarket one.. right now i cut the stock one in half and am only using the SECOND fan.... but I never have to turn it on because while driving this thing keeps it really cool.

But at a long stop light it would be wise to have the fan on...

the other thing im going to do is get a standard SBC thermostat neck and chop and weld it to fit... becuz right now the neck points the wrong direction.. lol.

this i know.. but it will only run at 160 with a 160 degree thermostat... it cools it enough to keep it right at the temp of the t-stat.... I have a 180 to put in it.. i figure i will put it in and see how it wroks...

not true..it will not run at 160..this is simply the point where the thermostat opens and the car will run a lil warmer than that..you gotta remember our guages arent the most accurate

a 160 thermo will not keep your car running at 160... it just opens up at 160, meaning circulation at that temp... think of it as a door that opens up at that temp, it doesnt guarantee your engine runs at that temp, only that the door is open at 160... personally i think the 160 is fine. i havent heard anything about being over 160 means loss of hp... and i dont believe it to tell you the truth.

i garentee it will run 160 on a cold night... becuz the radiator is cooling it down to that... during a warm day it stays in the area of 180-200.... but at night this thing runs cold as ice...
