I am working on installing a set of AFR 205 heads milled to 59cc and a G5X3 cam. We tore the engine down sunday night and quit because it was late.

Monday night I was cleaning off the gasket material on the block when I noticed a little crack in my #2 sleeve.



Not sure what caused it, never had a N2O back fire or anything major, the car was running fine. The crack is real fine, not all the way through the sleeve, and the block is unaffected. Of course with the new H/C combo I don't want to put it together like that.

Luckily I'm working on a building a LS1 3rd gen for my wife and happened to have a complete low milage '02 LS1 sitting in the garage, so for now the heads/cam are going in it and then in my car.

Still don't have the cam here from LG motorsports, hopefully wednesday. Got the fly cutting done tonight.



I didn't need this crap right now, but oh well, such is hot rodding!
I least I caught it before it went kaboom with the new heads on it!

I'd say that, overall, you got lucky. It's a good mechanic that catches the stuff he's not really looking for. I'll bet that if you had taken it somewhere to have it done, they would have overlooked it. Good catch, bad luck.

Thanks for the compliment, I always try to check everything twice. I'm still sad to see my engine like that, it served me well. Just ran 11.30 last weekend. I am glad to find it now though. I am moving to Hawaii in 2 months and will not have all the spare parts and resources over there that I have here. Best to fix it now.

I would advise to flycut the exhaust side too while it is open.

That sucks man... I lost #2 also, but it cracked down further and started down further. Wonder what caused that...

you sure that is a crack and not somthing that got in there and scartch the cylinder wall? cracks go all the way though.

Doesnt look like a crack to me just a scratch from a ring, cracks are not straight they are jagged, also that is in a spot that can be magnafluxed with a portable unit.

That's a good point, get it magnafluxed first with the little handheld unit. Should show up if it's a crack. My crack wasn't straight, it was fairly jagged, that really does look like a scuff mark. Can you feel it with your finger nail or what?
