Default !underhood protector thing?

so im washing my car, and i start cleaning my engine bay, when i realize how rediculous that tore up black pad looks pinned up on the underside of my hood.

so what is this thing for anyways? i've always thought it was to reduce heat on the hood, but others tell me its for a fire, the fire melts the plastic pins and drops the pad onto the engine...

so, am i able to take this stupid thing off? will the heat damage my hood, or the paint on the hood after time?

It's there to keep your hood from getting STD's.

It's actually there so overtime it will deteriorate and look like crap. It will then make you go buy a newer car.

Honestly, it's supposed to keep the metal hood from being really hot to the touch. Ever notice they aren't on the fiberglass WS6 or Firehawk hoods?

LOL@ hoods with STD's.

so will the heat ruin the paint? should i just leave it on, or take it off and burn it at the stake?

If it's all chopped up and stained looking I'd take it off.

If the dealer didn't want too much I'd try to get a replacement. Couldn't hurt to have a clean mat up there.

You can probably pick up a stock hood, with the mat on it, from a local guy who swapped his hood for an aftermarket hood, cheaper than the dealer will sell you just the mat

I'd take it off. In the later years they stopped putting them on. My '02 never had one.

I took the one off of my 94 and painted the underside of the hood made the engine bay look alot cleaner. It has been off for at least 5 years and never a problem with the exterior paint.

What you said is exactly what it is used for, Th fire burns the clips and the hood blanket falls to help put the fire out and redirect it away.

You can tale it off, without having any problems as far as excess heat, paint damage etc.

Yes it is for fire. It is not for keeping the steel hoods cool to touch. The late z28 and tA's (00-02 i think) also did not come with them.

I dunno I took it off my old car and the rapid temp difference from hot to kool and back cracked and gave it terrible turtle shell effect. I dont know if it would do it with these cars or not though just a tip.

if you think about it... would it even effect steel hood temps? first of all, it doesn't evene cover the WHOLE underhood, and its not sealed, so the heat can easily go inbetween this pad and the hood. and it doesn't have any type of cooling, so this pad will be the same ambient temps as any other spot in the engine bay, thus exposing the hood to the same heat as it would WITHOUT this pad in there

this might sound stupid... but are you sure they didnt do anything different to the hood material/paint between the years they DID and DID NOT put them on?

The underside of my hood is painted as well and there is nothing wrong with the paint. Paints are the same through the years maybe different colors but thats all i think is different

Isn't the padding a sound deadener? Many luxury vehicles have them to muffle obnoxious engine noise.
