Worth Swapping Heads?
Swapping a TRex cam and wanted to know know if it would be worth it to swap out my Patriot Perf. ported 243's approx. 64cc with 2.02"/1.57" valves and dual gold springs to say... AFR 205's or somthing worthwhile?
These 243's are already flowing 300cfm @ .600...
I don't have to do any flycutting with the TRex right?

Heya dude, those AFRs will net you a few extra but the extra cost has to be worth it to you for the gain. The TRex should fit under your current setup as long as the heads haven't been milled since it was intended for stock heads.
Shoot you are turning that thing into a monster! IMHO at your stage, and what we intend, is just to save for bigger cubes. SDPC has a great deal on a 427 LS7 shortblock, and with the Warhawk LS7X now it should be fairly interesting to see more cars becoming nightmares for Mustangs everywhere!

I don't think the flow numbers on those heads are as important as the intake port velocity, which the AFRs will win on of course. But I can't see it being that major. The only question I have is the larger valves you have. Those might hurt your clearance. You'll probably still clear, but might be below the recommended safe clearance.

Ryan, with the amount you want to spend on just changing your setup, you can almost get a stroker motor up and running!

Get the Edelbrock casting Terminator heads from TSP. A SS hit 490rwhp with a ms3 and terminator heads and a 90/90 setup. The terminator heads are also cheaper than AFRs....

I agree, but remember to let them know your desired setup. It's not like you can order them off the shelf and put down those numbers. I say that because I called and talked to John about the setup. He told me that the heads required a lot of work for that car. They weren't just off the shelf heads according to John. He said they had to do some custom work to sink the valves to give adequate clearance. I'm sure if you let them know your plans, the crew at TSP will work with you.
Anybody know what times that car ran? Dyno numbers are nice, but the bottom line is track times. I hope it ran good. I will end up with Terminators in the future if they consistently perform.

This may seem like a newb question, but just wondering if flycutting was required can it be done without removing the engine, and taking the pistons out? If thats the case then flycutting would e a big deal and I can see why he wouldn't want to go that route.
I guess you could make a jig and flycut the pistons while still in the block in the car, but would think that would be differcult too, getting it right.

I've heard of plenty of people doing it while the engine was still in the car. Or you could take another 20 minutes and just pull the motor from the top. Once you're far enough to flycut in the car, you're just a step from pulling the motor and having all the room in the world to work on it.
It would be the same no matter how you do it as far as getting the depth correct. There's a collar on the shaft of the tool so you only cut as deep as you set it.

dont switch your heads. it would be a PITA for very little gains, even if i had $2500 in cash sitting infront of me i wouldnt switch from ported LS6s to AFRs.
with T-Rex you dont need to fly cut. please tell me that you did rod bolts also, if not you need to do them so you can spin into upper rpms.. also since you have a 99 you are going to have issues with oil return.. how are you going to pass a T-Rex through cali smog laws? haha. if you got a LQ4 block and painted it with aluminized paint i dont think you would get caught, just by looking at it i couldnt tell the diffrence, let alone some snivling cali emissions jerkoff. only reason why i say LQ4 in your case is because you have the poor oil return 99, might as well build another shortblock to put into your car, with all the associated goodies and then put your LS6 heads on your new 6.0 beauty

far as trex in cali.... don't worry about that
far as flycutting.... i'm not wanting to go through that hassle
far as bad '99 block.... this is just temporary as i will probably will be swapping it out or rebuilding the bottom end
far as minimal gains.... how minimal are we talking here? 10~15 throughout the band? ...think i need to go do some research
