Default anyone running a Meziere "Race" pump on the street?

hey guys....

i was wondering if anyone has tried running the Meziere "Race" pump on the street? if so, are you just not running a thermostat then? how are the temps then?

if i go with one of these, then i will only have the alt to run off the crank pulley. so should i not worry about getting an underdrive pulley? or would it still be worth something?

thanks,
Dave

I've run one ocassionally on the street without any problems. it just takes longer to warm up. it might be an issue on cold days driving on the freeway though.

your right, you don't really need an UD pulley with it. I did have problems with belt slippage until I re-used the stock tensioner and L bracked. there is a thread in drag tech about how to mount it.

yea, this would be something i'd only use during the warmer months and swap back to a stock one when it gets cold if it isn't too much of a pita.

thanks for your reply.

Hey i am in schaumburg also and i am running their drag race waterpump on the street. My temps range have never went over 160 but that is were my fans kick on, even without the thermostat it warms up fairly quick which is good. I just let it run for about 2 or 3 minutes before i take off just to get a little heat. The drag race one is different from the street version by no thermostat, no idler pulley, and a little smaller. looks more like a sbc ewp. Real nice piece with different outlets for different hose combinations.

I am also just running the drag race alternator setup from bmr which allows the alternator to be adjustable and sit down low.

drag race version flows less water 35gpm vs. 55gpm for the street version.. didnt see anyone mention that. theres also a h/d drag race version flows 40 gpm. street should take even longer then the drag version to get upto temp, unless theres no thermo... drag version is also lighter(not sure how much lighter) then the stock water pump where as the street is about identical to the stockers weight.

I have used the race pump also since 2001 or so. Its not my daily driver, but mine runs right at 160 and I've never had a problem with it.

The reason I see to have a crank pulley is SFI approval.

thanks for the pics, good looking setup there.

i don't think it's the pulley that's SFI apprioved but rather the dampner right? aren't they 2 different pieces? i just didn't think an underdrive pulley would be needed or even a good idea if the only thing i'm spinning is the alternator. i'd like to have it charging the batt as much as possible.

thats why I switched to an ATI. its only 10% underdrive and SFI approved instead of ASP's 25% underdrive and the one I had was not SFI.

while its technically just he dampener that has to be SFI approved, on a LS1 (and other genIII and IV motors) the pulley and dampener are the same piece. so online the terms get used interchangeably.

why not just use there street pump. why do you need the race version? im guessing there is a reason they made them different.

on the street pump, they installed a big pulley to act as an idler. spin that idler by hand.. you'll see that it has a decent amount of drag to it.
also its friggen huge.
and it doesnt save any substantial weight..

if i goto an electric pump, i feel im better off just running one of their universal pumps, and connecting the hoses to the front of the block.
that way i'll have my 55GPM pump, more room up front, and it wont have the drag of the belt... just my thoughts..

Keep in mind that the race version does not have heater or bypass provisions.

there both electric pumps, the street version has provisions for the heater and stock accessorys. so unless he's building a race car,
