Valve float....
My car is a '98 SS with 14K miles on it. I was told at the dyno today that I have some valve float at the end of the rpm band (5500RPM). I was also told that I need to get new valve springs to fix this problem. Is this true? Also, what gains would I see with Z06 Valve springs and an LS6 cam? Car is basically stock, except for intake/catback. Thanks in advance.

Re: Valve float....
Yes I went to the same dyno as him today. I'm not really sure whats going on. My dyno sheet does not look like his. At about 5500RPM there is a break in the line, and then it dips down at about 5800 picking up again at less than peak hp. I'll try to scan it tomorrow.

LOL, I guess I am not the only one with valve float.
Good I am feeling a little better now. Not pointing any fingers, but it may have been a hoax

Re: Valve float....
I spoke to the owner about doing springs in my car, however I don't really think this was a hoax. They are a very well known and well respected shop. Who knows though I guess you can't tell.

Re: Valve float....
Well what makes me think it was a scam was when I asked what are the best springs to do. They replied "our springs" so right there I thought it was a just a sales pitch because everyone else I asked said Comp and some other company.
Like what was said above this place is very reputable so it puzzles me to think they would do something like that. So I am not sure, either way I don't care, i'll live with the problem or go to GM to fix it. Maybe i'll even do a cam swap and have those changed in the process

I dynoed a few cars before and I had no valve float what so ever.

Re: Valve float....
Yeah right, it's a hoax, stock LS1 valves springs are perfect/bulletproof/indestructible and never go bad.
And I suppose no one who dyno'd that day NEVER revved there motor just a little bit higher than 5500rpms either right?
Wake up people, weak valve springs are quite common in these motors when the car is raced/driven hard, even if just a little bit.

Re: Valve float....
Relax everyone,
we are just asking a question, and it seems like everyone is saying that we were being taken for a ride. I am the last person here who wants to see anything break on my car and I am willing to take every precaution necessary to see my car stays in good shape, but I will not let my limited knowledge be used against me, thats why I am here on LS1Tech.com
I don't want to start any wars here because I have a lot of respect of them and their customers

Your car is probably fine, nothing is going to break or blow up and even if there is some valve float the car will still perform very well on the road/track if not the same even. But valve float is not uncommon (especially on 6 speeds) after some hard racing miles and it could hamper prformance down the road a bit.
I wouldn't worry about it until your trap speeds start to really suffer or unless you're doing a cam swap anyway.

Re: Valve float....
Speaking for myself, I am not saying in any way that this was rigged/a hoax. All I am trying to do is find out more info on something that is wrong with my car before I go and fix it. There were a lot of cars there, and maybe mine got misdiagnosed because they were busy. I just want to be sure before I spend $400+ to get a problem fixed.

Re: Valve float....
Guys, this thread is getting out of hand. I did not start it as a knock on anyone. All I wanted to know was the symptoms of valve float, what my dyno chart was like, and the best option to fix my problem. Please stop bashing this company, saying that the whole thing was a hoax. Until someone proves to me that it was, I'm taking there word for it. I am going to look into my problem further, just like I would any other problem. Lets please get back to the topic and stop bashing people, or I will end up deleting this thread.

Re: Valve float....
DURS96TA and 2002 Trans Am..
There doesn't appear to be problems with your valve springs, however- the same can't be said about the dyno:
https://ls1tech.com/ubb/ultimatebb.p...;f=12;t=000964
A free Dyno Day shouldn't end up costing $650 or $450.. especially if the work isn't necessary.
Any rebuttals from Dave or TechHombre??

Re: Valve float....
Jaggedy lines can be due to valve float, detonation, etc. Could have a miss and need plugs.
If you have a ton of track passes on your car and lot of miles yes you can have valve float.
But you might also need a tuneup.
