Default simple cam swap in LS1, what to go with

alright my friend has an 00 SS with a brand new LS1 crate engine after the old one blew up. he has lid, LT's full exhaust and the basics, but hes looking for more outa the motor and i told him a cam will really wake it up. i dont know anything about LS1s really cause ive never had the need/interest to learn seeing as ive never owned one.

he wants something that is fairly streetable, however its not his DD, he also wants a good lope, something that will pull close to the stock RPM range, nothing too crazy and something that can be done for a not too rediculous price.

what cam would you guys recommend for something like what im explaining, and what else would need to be changed with the cam swap? he is also ready to drop the cash for a tune, maybe even a full dyno tune.

a guy i know put a used cam in his LS1 and only installed new valve springs. is it this simple or what is the deal with these? im an LT1 guy so this is all new to me.hehe, thanks for any help.

I'd have your friend start by asking the engine builder of that new block what they would recommend for a cam.

Who built the block, is it forged, what are the cubes, what heads are going on it?

its a stock LS1 bottom end, with all his old top end back on it. completely factory shortblock from a GM dealer, and all factory 70k mile top end.

Is his car an A4 or M6? If it is an A4 I would have him go with a TC. I would go with a cam around 233. Check out the torquer 2.

Have you searched for information about the 230/224 a.k.a. TR230 cam?

id def. look into purchasing a new timing chain. Economic route would be to purchase the LS2 timing chain. You also should buy new Ti retainers and a ported oil pump while ur at it.

Torquer v2 cam produces great power and its a nice street cam.
or any 224 cam can also produce good numbers and be perfect for street applications...but i would suggest going with the Torquer v2. goodluck.
