wierd ticking noise
This is starting to bug the hell out of me.
I have a 222/224/112 cam with a 566 lift.
I have since developed a ticking noise on my valve train. Its not really running crappy or anything, its just annoying as hell.
I have the correct length pushrods and everything and the lift isnt big enough to be slapping the valves on the pistsons, so what else could it be?
It isnt something that happens all the time. Just every once in a while.
Does anybody have any ideas?
Its DEFINATELY coming from the top end of the engine, so my guess it like a loose rocker arm or something. Anyone have any other ideas?
Im broke as hell, so Im hoping its nothing TOO serious.

Could be an exhaust leak.
Could be the pushrod hitting the side of the exit hole in the head (stock rockers?).
I had to Dremel some relief because the pushrods were rubbing on the exit hole after I installed the Comp Cams #1500 rocker system)
Also had some ticking, but it went away after I adjusted the valves.
Good luck!

you know, thats almost what it sounds like. Because on the inside of the valve cover is that sheet metal layer inside. I wonder if my rocker is hitting that.
But my lift isnt THAT big.... is it?

yeah... this is my first F-body. I used to drive a cobra but now that Im actually digging into engines and not relying on a blower, its a WHOLE new world.
hahaha, now I just gotta figure out how to fix this damn torn hose.

I think I found the problem.... I think its a rocker hitting the shroud on the inside of the valve cover.
I dunno... I put a metal rod to my valve cover and It was SUPER loud when I put my ear to it, but it only happens occasionally, soooo I dunno.
Ill look into it.

With a cam and any upgrade in the valvetrain, it will get noisier. Lifters, Exhaust leaks, loose rocker arms, spun bearing, improper lifter preload, etc etc.
Go with the simple first, the dangerous ones look for the telltale symptoms like low oil pressure, constant tick or knock, driveability issues. Remember K.I.S.S. ...
It hopefully is just the nature of the beast, but likely just your valvetrain being amplified by the valvecovers, higher spring pressure, or changes you have made (running a different oil, etc etc).

I dont know if any of you guys know Ed (EdBlownVert) on LS1.com , but he did a little tuning for me last night and he says his car does it too and just make sure my oil pressure is good.
My friend Troy did an MS4 cam and his car makes the same noise now, so Im starting to get less worried about it.
As my friend Pat said when I cammed my car. Get used to the wierd ticks, crappier gas mileage and a rumbly idle.
Whatever. Ya know?

I'm running that spec Comp cam in my car and it certainly is louder than it was pre-cam. Using stronger springs and having more lift would contribute to it I reckon. I put Comp 7.40" pushrods in a couple of weeks back and the ticking noise was reduced considerably.
As for the fuel usage, get a good tune done and you'll find it isn't too much different from the stock cam, with the upside being heaps more power.
Cheers,
Macca

Why would you trust a guy who is down 99% of the time?
