Normally they should shut off, they can be tuned to stay on a little longer though. Were you overheating? Thinking they'll stay on if that's the case even with the key off...

Yeah it is sounds like your car got a little hot and the fans stayed on to cool it. Happened all the time on my 87 TA. Thats why when you read manuals they all say to disconnect battery when working near fans and they put those funny *** caution stickers saying the fans could come on at any time.

Yea what he said....I ran my car once with out antifreeze for like 10 min and it heated up real good......to mayb 250*.....the fans stayed on after i turned it off......

THats probally all it is.....Check antifreeze and make sure its running normally.....

Does it do it all the time or just that one time?

Looked it up. Under low speed fans operation in my helms - After listing all the times they should be on according to normal operation, AC on above 50*, normal operating temps, etc. "After the vehicle is shut off if the engine coolant temperature at key-off is greater than 284* and system voltage is more than 12V. The fans will stay on for approximately 3 minutes." I have LEDs on mine and fans have never failed to shut off after turning the key off. Don't know if it's different for other years.

Has your car ever been tuned? If so, someone probably lowered the temp at which the fans stay running after turning the car off. I've got mine set to run for 2 minutes if ECT is above 200*F when I shut it off. In stock form, the fans won't stay running unless the coolant is over 280*F....in which case I'd be a little worried about your car overheating.
