Question LS1 torque help, seeking advise of the gurus

Just recently purchased one of the few reaming '04 350hp LS1s from Scoggin Dickey. I know the LS1 is old gear compared to all the LS2 & LSX hdwr out there, but this new $2900 LS1 crate motor is my starting point.
Putting it into a 3400lb daily driver ('95 C1500) and looking to add a little lower end torque while maintaining mileage.

1.) Thinking of adding a few ponies with a quick head swap. Will the slightly larger int port of the 243 head hurt my low end tq in the truck? Is that head best bang for buck on the 5.7ltr?

2.) How about other torque adders...6.0L truck intake manifold, cam swap, Rhoads lifters, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Cam swap is the best option for building torque. I'd consider that even before a head swap. Cam choice depends a lot on whether you run headers or not. Basically, you'll want to get your dynamic compression way up and keep your shift points around 6000 rpm for best performance in a truck. Tell us more about your proposed bolt-on mods (intake, exhaust) and whether you plan on running a high stall torque converter. Your cam selection will be easier to narrow down after that.

gen3tri5guy,

Welcome to the forum! Patrick would be my first choice for questions about a torque cam. Give us some info like transmission type, rear gear ratio, RPM range, vehicle weight, and type of exhaust. I'm interested in what he has to say as well...

Thanks for the prompt reply. Your expertise comes highly recommended.
I intend to use the 6.0L truck manifold, primairly of for fan shroud/air filter interferance issues. Probably headers as well...but keeping primary size down in the smaller range (1 5/8). The truck is currently a 5-spd manual, but I will be dropping in a t56 from the guys around the corner here (t56 rebuilds, Houston). Rear gear is 3.73. Light duty 10bolt posi.
Not really going to see much track time, other than a few curiousity passes...just to see.
I'll be hooking up to the occasional bumper hitch car hauler, so low end tq is important.
I've driven a number of LS1 F-bodies, and as impressive as they all are, most are a little soggy down low. I'm willing to give up some top-end HP, to help bring in the tq curve from 1700RPM & up.
Thanks again.

For your application with a 6.0L intake, headers and effortless torque down low, you'll want to keep your intake valve closing point between 36-38 degrees ABDC, your overlap under 4 degrees at .050" and have a 4-6 degree split on your intake/exhaust. LSA will most likely fall somewhere in the 110-112 range.

Patrick,

So if I get what your saying he would be OK with something like this?

Intake (XER lobe #3720 220 .581)
Exhaust (XER lobe #3722 224 .581) or even a (XER lobe #3723 226 .585)
IVO 2 / IVC 38
EVO 44 / EVC 0 110 LSA installed on a 108 ICA with 918 springs?

Theres always the old fall back dubble hump heads and 3/4 race camshaft combo, for that double punch uppercut when nobody expects it. Full race if you want them to know what your packing. I had that in a 69 that worked well!
