Condensation/Burning oil questions

Default Condensation/Burning oil questions

I have roughly 300 miles on my 427 and have burnt 1.4 qts oil in that time. Does that seem normal on a brand new motor? When I first got it running I let it get fully hot and checked for any leaks and what not, once it was fully hot, I changed the oil and filter and again at the 200 mile mark. I have been using the Shell Rotella 15/40 as recomended. Also, When I went to top the oil off and removed the breather there was a light brownish type gel inside of the aluminum insert for the breather that goes into the valve cover. I wiped it off and it was very light and it was not watery at all. I was wondering if this is a byproduct of assy lube and what not used during the build. Thanks for all the help guys.

Condensation seems to be normal on just about any big-cube engines I've seen, especially if there are a lot of short drive cycles involved. They seem to overtax the stock PCV/breathing systems quite often.

300 miles isn't very much to start measure oil consumption, it will probably burn a little extra between the first couple of oil changes.

I would say thats alot in just 300 miles, considering this:

When I broke in my 436ci, normal mellow driving, I didn't burn one drop of oil between this schedule: I did a change at 50 miles, 150 miles, 500 miles, than 1,000 miles, than 3,000. Non-synthetic oil. Than thereafter, synthetic every 3,000. It took about 1 1/2 years to start burning oil, but now it burns a holy shitload of oil, you don't even want to know how much, I need a refresh

Joseph, all my driving has been short. I have been trying to do alot of heat cycles to it. As well as make sure everything is ok, I do not want to find problems while sitting in traffic. Thanks for the help guys.

you dont have to worry about heat cycling the motor man, that things ready to go.

1.4 qts in 300miles??

New motors won't burn anymore oil than broken in ones. If they do, it's negligible. The 427 I built burnt that same amount of oil and it never got any better. I put 1600 miles on it just in case but it never got better. Is their oil residue on your bumper or the ground behind your tips?

My problem was due to washed down piston rings because of the engine shop that installed the reluctor ring backwards.

No oil residue on the bumber or on the ground. I take it this is a good thing? Thanks again for all the help guys.

Also, I know that a very small amount might have come out of the breathers due to being new. Nothing major, just a light coating on them and a couple of light drips onto the headers.

well, yea, it means not alot is coming out of your exhaust, but 1.4 qts is WAY more than reasonable or normal. i would talk to TSP

I have talked with TSP. I am going to keep an eye on it. I have documented the miles and when it was topped off. I plan on deleteing the whole pcv system and putting miles on it this weekend and seeing what happens. If I still have an issue after this weekend I will pursue farther. Should I vent the valley cover and if so where should I vent it to?

Yeah, mine was consuming the same amount of oil as your is and it was spraying oil droplets onto the ground behind the tips and black oil residue would get onto the rear bumper while driving. It didn't smoke much, a little at idle, thats it. I assumed you checked for external leaks and what not. Oil in the coolant?

Absolutely. I am hoping that the stock PCV has a huge roll in this. That is why I deleted it and will run it again without it. With about 100 miles on it I noticed blue smoke at start up and with pulling out of the garage but that seems to have stopped, however, when getting on it just a little seems to still smoke. Now I do not run cats so I know that is not a great gauge but still. It is not alot of smoke just enough for me to see it out the mirror.
