What cam to stick stock shortblock in the 10s?
Working on some cyl heads and will need a cam to go with it. I know Raughammer (shortblock rebuild) is running the C2 hammer cam but what else is out there. I will be running 5.3 heads and probably just a thing head gasket for 11 to 1 compression.

If you want to run high 10's... well I used the little 222/222 .566/.566 "hammer cam" - C1.
If you want a bit more, (mid 10's) then go for the 224/224 .581/.582, C2.
Much O' more info on cams on my web page.
Good luck!

There is so much more then cam selection to run 10s with a stock shortblock. Angie at Thunder Racing ran 10s with a TR 220/220 camsaft.

I know there is weight and traction and everything else. But a 10.6 in a light car should still be in the tens with a 3300 pound car. Just trying to complete another step of the journey to the 10s.

I know there is more than 2 people in the 10s. What cam did SAM run in the orange SS. Also wondering if they flycut the pistons.

The "C2" is nearly identical to our TSP 224R cam. The only difference is the amount of advance that is ground into the camshaft. I ran the 224R and then swapped out to our 228R. I picked up 9 RWHP with the new cam over the 224. So, there's still more power to be had. FYI, we're having a cam sale right now that you can check out in the sponsor GP and specials forum. We've got some killer pricing!
A lot of things have to go right to click off 10.60's with a heads/cam setup. Besides have a very light car, you also have to have some stellar weather. -1,500' density altitude tends to help out. You also have to consider his 60' of 1.38 on that pass. I do not know of ANY other 4L60E-equipped cars with heads/cam out there that has made it into the 1.3x 60' range. Just some food for thought.
With that said, I'm looking for some solid 10's in the next few months with the 228R cam and a set of our heads. This will be with a raceweight right around 3,450#, too. FYI, you will need to fly-cut the pistons if you do shave your heads. The easiest way to avoid cutting the pistons would be to get a set of ported 5.3L heads.
Let me know if you have any questions. I'll try to get a graph up comparing my 228R cam to my old 224R.

Re: What cam to stick stock shortblock in the 10s?
Yeah im not really shooting for 10.60 i just want to be solid in the 10s. Not a 10.98 or something but a 10.90 any day all day long would be great. I have 5.3 heads and on Raughammers cam page it says you can mill them .060 with no valve piston issues. Wish i had money to get in on your cam sale but things just arent going my way right now with money.

Re: What cam to stick stock shortblock in the 10s?
Raugh:10.66 with 3200 raceweight(?) 224 cam, awesome weather. Stage 2 MTI heads
Jantzer:10.82 with 3100 raceweight old mms 224 cam, not good weather (+1000 D/A) Stage I Jantzer heads. (EWP was run too)
Terry Burger:10.87 with 3220 raceweight, 229 cam, not good weather (+800/1200 D/A). Stage 2x MMS heads. (EWP was run too)
Angie: 10.80 with 3020 raceweight, 220 cam, and good weather (-300 I think). Stage I cnc heads.
With this data I'd be more concerned about raceweight than cam choices as you have the whole spectrum covered here: 220 cam up to a 229 cam. I think this shows its really not that crucial.
Since you said you didnt want to run a 10.98 I will refrain from bringing up my 226 cam/stock heads combo that only ran 10.98

Re: What cam to stick stock shortblock in the 10s?
Wow 10.98 with 3300 race weight. Looks like there are alot of options out there for cam. Every car i know is going on a diet this winter so raceweight shouldnt be that big of a problem. Hopefully get it down to 3200. I believe i am at 3400 if not slightly below. But going with slicks and skinnies and a fiberglass hood. But seems just a decent sized cam will put me into the 10s no problem.

Re: What cam to stick stock shortblock in the 10s?
Try the cam I have...MTI X1, you might be able to squeeze it in there, I'm not sure on the P to V clearance though...
230/227 .591/.571 112lsa..
I'm sure if I set my car up for all motor and dropped some weight out of it I would EASILY hit 10's...

The X1 Cam is sweet! I got alot of power out of my set-up. Take a look at my Sig. My timing is 23 degrees for spray and I`m rich. I run a 100 shot and she loves it! Not bad for being tuned safely with a A4,stall,12-bolt,big wheels!

Re: What cam to stick stock shortblock in the 10s?
The X1 looks great but that P to V clearance will be an issue. I plan on milling my heads pretty good so i may just go with a custom grind and get it just a hair smaller to make it work. Should be a great finished product when its done.

Re: What cam to stick stock shortblock in the 10s?
Well, the quickest cam only LS1 runs a 226/226. High 10's with stock heads These new monstor, split reverse, ect. cams out now give good dyno #'s, but on the track it looks like the standard single pattern cams, 229 and smaller are running the best with stock cubes, in general. Just look at the list in the drag section. All the cams mentioned in this thread would be great choices.
