Default 7 mpg help!!!!!!!!!!

recently purchased a 94 camaro from tmorgan800 and it runs great but it is soooo bad on gas. the mods the car has include a lt4 conversion kit heads intake hot cam tes headers 1.6 gmpp roller rockers slp cold air intake lt4 knock module pcm for less tune and a tci 3500 stall converter.

tommorow im swapping out the stall converter and replacing it with a 1800 stock stall im hoping this will cure the gas milage but i doubt that it will give me an extra 7 mpg so what other type maitanance can i do and what are common gas miliage killers in these cars i would greatly appreciate any help you can give thanks.

btw yesterday i put 20 bucks of gas wich here in california 2 gallon haha j/k it was around 5.6 gallon and out of those 5.6 gallon i got exactly 38 miles. this here equates to 6.7 miles per gallon and im paying 3.69 a gallon .

If you swap the stall out -- basically you're shooting yourself in the foot as far as performance is concerned.

I hate to sound like a jerk, but you purchased a heads/cam/stalled car and expected to get good mileage for a daily driver?

I'm cam only with tuning and a 3000 stall and I get about 9 in the city in heavy stop and go driving. That's one of the downers of running a higher stalled car. My suggestion to you -- obviously you're not too concerned with performance, swapping out the converter. Get it retuned with a more conservative tune on 87 octane.

Also -- as far as normal maint. stuff. Check your tire pressure, alignment, and condition of the ignition system (plugs, wires, optispark, ignition coil). Make sure the air filter is clean. Change the fuel filter. Swap the O2 sensors (only with AC Delco OE Replacements). Common sense stuff (because you purchased the car used) that might have been over looked by other owners.

It also might help to drive the car more conservatively, and avoid sitting in traffic (when you're not moving, you're getting 0mpg). Instead of sitting and waiting to take a left turn, make three right turns.

Its a lot of small stuff that you can do to help, granted its still a decently modded car built more with performance in mind, not fuel economy -- so there is only so much you can do. Or just find some old beater you can use for a DD.

having the torque converter start to grab around 3400-3600 rpm doesnt make sense to me since i dont drag race just the occasional romp on the highway or street race. and when im cruising down the street at around 35 mph the rpms seem to hover around 3-3200 rpms and with a stock stall they should be around 1-1500 rpms.

Sounds like more a tuning issue than anything. I could 13 out of an unlocked converter in a 700r4 driving 70 mph down the interstate! Slipping like a ****!

Wouldn't the tach be off by a certain percentage, not a constant rpm? If it were off by 200 rpm at 6500 rpm, that would be 3%.

Well you never even think about it only being 100 hp/177 ft lbs, 4 cylinders, and diesel fuel! That thing rocks for no more than it is! I think the older diesels (2004-down) are rated a little lower but probably drive very similar.

Mine typically gets 43-45 the way I drive it. 50 if I can keep my foot out of it!
