Default What polish for black paint?

I have heard not to use wax or any abrasives. What do you guys recommend for a good polish?

I use a rubbing compound type wax that is only wax no cleaners or anything in it. It also can be removed as soon as i put it on no wait time. I only use a buffer to put it on though. abrasives will put scratches or swirl marks Black is just a PITA to clean and detail but looks great of done right.

UH, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't rubbing compound one of the most abrasive things you can put on paint. It's abrasive enough to take out small scratches in paint and is usually used to correct paint problems before polishing and waxing.

Try Poor Boys Polish if you want non-abrasive. Or of course theres always Zaino or Tropicare...both are excellent products. If you need soemthing a little less expensive and want no abrasion NXT tech wax liquid doesn't seem to have any abrasives either but does kinda look plastic as far as shine. The others mentioned are top notch!!

I use zanio its by far the best polish that I have found for a black car. It gives it a deepness I have never seen with any other polish or wax.

Has anyone used Meguiars #7 show car glaze? If so did you apply anything else after that?

There are slight variations in the abrasiveness of rubbing compound, but this is generally correct. Unless the car needs a relatively sizeable amount of clear removed, you're going to want to bump it up to a polish.

And wax isn't abrasive. Lastly, who would seriously tell you not to use WAX? Who's giving you this advice? A polish will give you shine, but NO protection from the elements. Wax does a terrific job at sealing your work, beading water, and shields from dust much better than non-sealed work.

I have used meguiars 3 step wax and have great results. I have tried Zaino, I like it but it take a lot of time to do.

Are you talking about abrasive polishes or "polish" sealants like Zaino?

Abrasive wise I like Menzerna Intensive Polish and Final Polish II.

Sealant wise Zaino...wax...P21S.

wow .. interesting thread ..

Zaino is a sealant .. and a very good one ..

Menzerna makes some great polishes.

Tropi-care is very good stuff, and will take great care of your black paint.

Nothing wrong with waxing black paint ..

compounds are by definition abrasive. Wax is not.

If you use Meg's #7, you need to top it with something with some protection.. #26, S100, Mother's Syn wax, Tropi-care .. something that has protection .. #7 is pure polish, and if not topped with anything, will only last about a day or so.

Most of the damage to black paint comes from improper washing and drying .. not wax application ..

I am going to apply in a linear motion anyway as opposed to a swirling motion. This will work fine.

Most of the guys at Autopia are shade-tree detailers, like a few of us here. You're insulting quite a few people on here who are meticulous with their cars, myself included.

I agree .. lots of those guys on Autopia are here also ..

dudemandanman ... you don't have to be a pro to be very good at this .. NightWindDriftr is a good example of that . hobbyists that are better than some pro's ..

that said.. there are also a lot of pros on here ..

Things that everyone should remember about the advice given out in this forum:

- It's free.
- Most of us tailor our responses to the level of the question, and the ability of the person asking the question.
- There is more than one way to do most of this .. opinions vary ..
- How I would deal with an issue is myself often very different from how I tell someone else to deal with it, because I don't know their ability and decision making ability, so I almost always default to the safest possible method I can think of that stands a chance of fixing the issue.

and, as far as the best advice .. I would argue that Autopia is not the best source ,, there are others that are better .. including some that are pro only ..
