150K...got some questions
First off, I've got a 98 Z28. Engine's got 150K on it. I recently bought some used parts to go on it...Hot Cam, heads, Harland Sharp 1.8's, and hardened pushrods. My dad, being a bit of a pessimist says that I'll unravel the engine in short order once I put the parts on it. I can definitely see his point, but what are my options...on a budget, mind you...to make the engine last as long as possible? I've seen rod bolts mentioned being as I have a 98. I've also got a new ported oil pump on the list of things to buy, as well as a new timing set. Car will be a weekend toy, with an occasional track day (maybe once or twice a year).

Dont dawg on your car everwere and you will probaly be ok, 150k is alot of miles on a ls1, even if it was babied for all them. Thats alot of friction, heat and metal on metal action. Bolt them on there and have fun while it last! may last a week may last a decade! If It Unravals..knit it back together
ps. my 99 has 120k miles and I give her hell with nitrous almost every weekend and still running the stock bottom. GM Built a hell of a motor for our cars. theyll take a beating and keep on ticking

Before doing any mods to the engine, I would first perform a compression and leakdown test of the motor to see what your working with. It's makes no sense to throw $$ at a motor that has high leakdown or low compression on a few cyls. My $.02

Go find an Iron 6.0 out of a junkyard, preferably an LQ9 out of an Escalade, but any old LQ4 from a 2001 or newer 2500HD will work... Have that on standby in the garage...And put a billion shot on yours to really finish it off good, and have a lot of fun watching it throw rod bolts and twisting pushrods.
No seriously, 6.0s are cheap, they fit just like the LS1 did, and they have a LOT more torque. Not to mention that with the new $800(pair) L92 heads and $500 L76 intake combo (manifold, rails, injectors, TB) from chevy you can really crank out some serious power. But, to play that game you need a 4" bore...hince the 6.0
I wonder if anyone out there has made their first mod a 6.0? Not a K&N or a catback or headers or a tune....but a freakin LQx!!! Do it man...

I have thought REAL long and good about holding off on H/C and just picking up a 6.0 and some L92/L76 combo... Junkyard 6Liter, gotta love it

we all remember the car craft article where they made 550hp with an LQ9 (flat tops) l92 heads, a 228/230 cam, and a holley 850....and thats all folks. Might I also mention the 485ft/lbs....or the 400ft/lbs at 2000rpms. Imagine what a Trex or giant or MS4 would do with that bottom end and those heads...mmm Oh yeah, the budget factor is in there too. Lets call it a $1000 engine, with say the SLP non milled kit (heads, intake, rails, injectors, elec. TB, Rockers, pedestals, cable bracket...every thing you need) for what..$1600, then a 90mm tb (sell the elec TB), a good cam for $400, and some pushrods and all the gaskets. Someone whose done it correct me, but could you figure this gm junkyard monster could be put together for under $4k?
You would make so much power that your 10bolt would spit teeth and bolts out just by closing the hood too hard.

Heck they made 485 hp with a STOCK LQ9, a hotcam, LS6 springs, and a holley 750!
Sorry to hijack your thread though man. I just thought I should plant the 6.0 seed in as many peoples minds as I can. It looks cheap and freakin awesome. Probably the route that I will take.
But yeah seriously, (cough) I second the seafoam and oil change
