Default Can you due a cam swap, without the tranny in?

Well I have the tranny out , and when I did my last cam install, the tranny was in, before I start poking around on my flywheel, or something else to keep the motor from spinning, I wanted to ask if it is possible to due a cam swap withouit the tranny. THanx for your help. My car is a six speed.

This is kind of a crazy question.... When you build a motor, do you have to hook a tranny up to it to put a cam in??? The answer is no, although when you go to tighten the crank bolt down you will have to have someone under the car holding the flywheel with a flywheel tool, and that someone will have to have some muscles cause it takes a buttload of torque on that crankshaft bolt. And my guess is that the screwdriver method would not work in this case. But it would just make things alot easier if the tranny was in the car. Hope this helps out.

If you get the screwdriver in just the right spot it works. I did mine like that.

Sounds like I better just put the tranny back in? Getting in the screwdriver in just the right spot, does not sound good to me at all. Kinda sucks though, my tranny is not going to be back for about two weeks, just though might as well put the cam and heads on finally. THanx for the input.

No, put the cam in. Put the trans in when it gets back. If you dont wanna do the screwdriver thing (which is tried and true mind you), there is a tool that can hold the flywheel. I dont think the people in this thread know what its called though.

Dont be a pansy! Get it in and then take a vid for us

Well you dont have a location in your profile, so how should we know who's local to you so they can help. Otherwise go to the regional forums and post up you would like some help, as long as you give them a little notice, someone will help you.
