Default 6.0 Tow Motor

I have a 2002 Chevy 1/2ton 4x4 with a 4.8L & an Auto.Im looking at putting a low mile LQ4 into the truck for more towing power.I have not found a motor yet but Im looking at those places on EBAY that sells low mile takeouts.Im limited on the money and I will do the work myself.I need the 9.0 cmp/ratio for 87 octain and Im going to put a good fresh air intake and a set of full length headers on it(If they have them available).I looking at an aftermarket cam for more torq. The cam is from Vincihighperformance.com the specs are
Dur@ .004" 272/280
Dur@ .050" 210/218
Lift .551/.551
LSA 116

Any input on the combination is welcome.Im located in Mooresville NC if you know any shops that may help with the swap. Thanks for your time.

That would make a good combo IMO. LSA will make it idle a little rough though.

Nothing wrong with that cam. Nothing. that is a good choice for a street cam. The LSA is fine. It will in turn have less overlap and make it more of a stealth cam. It has +18 degrees so it will be really quiet anyway. Just because the LSA is lower does not necessarily mean its gonna make it choppier. The 116 will make for a nice broad stock-like powerband.

I like your thinking. I would run the cam.

for the towing issue i thought he'd want more low end torque....thus my statement of the lower lsa

in my opinion from the trucks ive driven the 5.3 seems to have alot more zip than the 6 liter.....why not just do the cam and headers on the 4.8.....
my bro in law had a 00 silverado with the 4.8 had towhaul mode in tranny with 3.73 gears....i thought the truck pulled great once you got moving.....and i live in a very mountainous area......

id stay away from ebay engines...its kind of a hit or miss deal....

LSA alone does not contribute to low end torque, you need to take into account the CR as well (plus other factors). Since the LQ4 is a 9.5:1, the 116 LSA will boost cylinder pressure in the chambers, which will boost torque. On higher CR engine (like 10.4+) you can get away with a lower LSA.

I totally agree with orangeapeel.

This may have more to do with the 5.3L/4.8L being rutinely mated to a 4L60E with a 3.06 first gear, as opposed to the rutinely mated 4L80E to the 6.0L, which has a 2.48 first gear.

Either way if he is looking for something better at towing I'd go with a 6.0, there is no better way gain low-end power than by increasing displacement. Plus he’ll have more low-end to give up when choosing a cam compared to a 4.8 or 5.3.

I have company trucks with all 3 engines. The 6.0 will run slap over the other two. The smaller ones that you think "feel" faster is probably due to lighter trucks/better gears.

While your at it, why not slap some stock small chamber heads heads on there to get the comp ratio up a little bit. You would be amazed how a properly cammed and tuned 10:1 compression will run on 87 octane. I've done it tons with no knock retard, and it really helps out with low end torque.

And maybe add some stiffer leaf springs. A 3/4 ton will pull much better than a 1/2 ton.

But the 6.0 engine is awesome. We have that in a 1 ton work van, and another with the old 5.7 and that 6.0 rocks.
