ok, say you are replacing pads but not the rotors...what do you pratice, cut them always, cut them only if there is warping or visible wear or never cut them?

i always turn them but i also work at a shop and have acess to a brake lathe.

Always cut them, but make sure the shop that cuts them checks to make sure they are within specs to be cut

I warp/ruin a set of rotors with one set of pads (Hawk HPS). I just buy a new set $30 Autozone rotors each time I change the brakes.

I don't like having turned rotors at all because of the lack of material and ease of warping with less metal to absorb the heat...

watch out where you get them cut. i worked at an auto parts store for a while and found out that most stores do not know how to cut rotors. even the store managers can put a set of rotors on the machine and you can watch the rotor wobble while they cut it.

For what a new set of rotors cost, its usually just worth it to buy new ones.... Sometimes its even cheaper to buy new ones...

always get them cut. if you road race, youll probably warp them anyway. if its a daily driver, then always cut when you do pads. i worked for a parts store with a machine shop, and they knew how to use the tools. theyll let you know if you need new rotors yet. as long as you get them cut by someone who knows what theyre doing (not billy bobs shadetree repair shop) cutting them is fine, safe, and economical (depending on your shop)

I used a set of the Hawk HPS pads, as well. My rotors warped ... only time I ever have them turned is if the front is a little wobbly at high braking speeds from warping/overheating; otherwise, I never have mine turned.

If I'm working on my Camaro or my truck which are both used hard, I machine the rotors. On my wifes Volvo or any car that falls into the beater class, I just measure the rotors to make sure they aren't too thin and throw pads on.

I like to replace the rotors. It just seems to me that once they get turned they they get screwed up alot quicker, and you just end up replacing them anyway. Unless you use expensive rotors, why not replace them while you have it apart?

Replace the fronts and keep the rears (do not turn) with every pad change. My front only seem to make it through one and a half set of pads.

For regular street use it is unnecessary to resurface rotors unless you have lateral runout that is out of spec (ie "warpage"). If indeed you do have lateral runout/pulsation problems your best bet is simply to buy a new set of quality replacement rotors like Brembo blanks, ACDelco Durastops, etc.

even tho they are brand new, 99% of the time those are warped right out of the box. maybe thats why you think they are warped with one set of pads, cause they were crooked as a georgia politician to begin with. LOL.

I bet only drilled/slotted rotors don't come pre-warped.

AutoZone rotor may be cheap, but they are pretty warp resistant in my exp.

I dont think I have ever had a rotor turned. I just replace em with the pads.
