Default 405.5 RWHP 385.1 RWTQ

Just got back from Speed Inc and I am pleased to show off my 405.1 RWHP dyno sheet. I feel a sense of gratification that throughout this whole project I was able to set a goal for myself and meet it. For those two of you who haven't heard about my project, the details are in my sig, and if you follow the link to my website, I have tons of pictures and info about everything.

I figure with the rough estimate of a 18% drivetain loss, this puts me right around 490 crank HP, and had I had an M6, the difference in drivetrain loss would have put me at 420 RWHP.

Here is my dynosheet:

This was by no means an expensive project. After everything said and done, I spent a little under $3500 to get me where I am. Had I skipped out on some of the optional things like the double roller chain and the new oil pump, I probably could have gotten the same results (albeit less reliability) for right around $3000.

Thanks to everyone who offered their help and guidance throughout this project, and if you learn anything from this, is that anyone can do a heads/cam swap on an LS1!

I should also add these numbers are through a full exhaust (Hooker LTs, custom Y with Carsound cats) SLP Loudmouth with the resonater replaced with a Dynomax bullet muffler) with cats installed. Had I gotten rid of the cats, I probably would have gained another 8-10 RWHP. Had I had true duals or cutouts, maybe even another 5 HP after that.

I remember when I removed my FLP cats, I picked up 11rwhp and 23rwtq...

Yeah, we do have similar setups. Since you are going with 5.3L heads, you'll have better compression than me and the TR230 cam is bigger too, so you should have at least another 10 or so RWHP over me! Let us know the results!

Constrictor,
Congradulations! I was hoping your big project would turn out great, and it sure sounds like it did! You must be so relieved it all worked out OK!
Good job!

Was that with a locked converter? As you know, thats the only way to get an acurate rwhp reading.

Great numbers with your A4 car....

I need to get my car on a dyno too, but I don't think my little TR220 cam will be enough to make 400 rwhp. Should see around 390. Oh well.... That little 220 cam does have lightning fast throttle response.

i know your head porter - Chris - and he is one of the best in the country. very good stuff indeed! 400+ rwhp on an honest dyno through full legal exhaust is outstanding!

You posted that the car wasn't very driveable with the big cam when you first got it running. How is the driveability after the tuning, ie. idle, surging. Any lock up problems?

Thanks for the compliments everyone, and yes, this was with a locked convertor. Some people think thats a dyno trick for an A4, but I disagree, its a realistic way of measuring performance without having any of the disadvantages of having a torque convertor.

Yes, Chris is a top notch guy. I know he's not a sponsor, so I'll have to watch what I say, but he gave me great customer service throughout all the months when I first talked to, to even after I got my heads back and had questions. His prices are very fair, he builds the heads exactly as you request him, and although his flow chart numbers won't compare to those of some other sponsors, the HP numbers will. I highly recommend going with his heads. Since I cant post a direct link, if anyone is interested in getting in touch with him, PM or e-mail me.

Drivability is 1000% improved after the tuning. With the cam and transmission combo I went with, PCM tuning is a requirement. Speed Inc. is over 50 miles from my house, and on the way back, I got stuck in about 2 hours of Chicago rush hour traffic, and the car never once tried to stall, or overheat or anything. Don't get me wrong, theres no way to miss that I have a cam in there, its still very noticable, but it is very drivable on the street. My car is no longer a daily driver, but if I wanted it to be, it could.
