Default What vacuum pump setup are you using?

Looking to do a vacuum pump setup on my new race engine and was wondering what you were using? Are they pretty much universal or does anyone make specific kits for our cars?

So far I've found an Aerospace kit and Moroso. Thunder Racing also has a kit, but its electric. Has anyone used it before?

We're using a star vacuum pump with their bracket and aluminum standoffs welded on the motor plate. They are located in Baltimore MD.

The STAR Sportsman vacume pump will work very well for you. You also need to get the In-Line Regulator. If you really want to be a cool guy you can get some of the clear plastic line instead of braided AN line. Oh, and get a motorplate too.

And only cause I'm feeling generous:

So what are your thoughts on Aerospace kits? I found a really nice setup, yet expensive, on Jegs.

the stuff that Ben put links up to looks good, the aerospace stuff is also good from what I have seen.

Personally I have been looking around at this stuff as well.. and I am leaning towards an aerospace setup and adding a regulator like Ben suggested. It's making it's way onto my list for next year.

Why would you need a regulator? Can you pull too much vacuum? I've read that the system without a regulator can pull 15". Is that too much?

The regulator obviously designed to regulate the amount of vacume the pump pulls on the engine. If you pull too much vacume you can hurt the engine. The adjustable regulator that I posted is convienent because it's infinately adjustable. The other way to regulate the vacume is to weld a fitting onto the valve cover that has a spring and some shims in it. To adjust the vacume you have to pull the stupid thing apart to adjust the shims. It's really just a big hassle. The regulator that Star makes is definately the way to go.

According to Star's website, the Sportsman vaccum pump uses 3 vanes which doesn't require a regulator.

Phil99vette, did you use the Sportsman or Standard pump?

Do you have any pics? What else did you purchase from Star to mount/make it function?

not on this computer,

Check Phils 7.50 mustang thread, i just purchased the pump and aluminum drivel pulley it comes with the mounting bracket.

Depending on where you are going to mount it you are going to have to get creative either with a motorplate of fab something to mount it on, i got my Mandrel and pulleys from Jones Racing, you are also going to need a ATI or Similar Dampener with the SBC Hub Bolt pattern.

you are going to need some sort of oil catchcan/breather/seperator. I'm using a Moroso unit but you can buy the star piece as well.

Damn, sounds like a big headache trying to piece everything together. What's wrong with the Aerospace kit that has everything in it? Haha.

So are you saying that my ASP SFI approved crank pulley is gona have to go?

not sure what Hub bolt pattern if any the ASP pulley has. It may just be tapped for the puller to get it off.

If you want a more user friendly setup, someone make a bracket to mount the Aerospace pump where the AC unit goes.

reason i went with star is that no one i have ever talked to have ever seen a broken Star Pump, when i called to see if i could get a rebuild kit because i got the urge take it apart to see it inside. They asked what the hell had happened because they have never had a failure (other then engine parts getting in when the motor lets go).

i have heard that they are the best from countless sources....

You will have to redrill the bolt pattern on the drive manderal for the asp pulley. I think Tim Tosoto can get those drive mandrels made for the Asp pulleys.

I can always swap the crank/balancer pulley if need be. I'm just wondering if I should piece together a Star kit, buy a Moroso kit, or the Aerospace kit. The Aerospace kit is $7XX, the Moroso kit is $8XX, and I'm sure by the time I piece together a Star kit, it'll probably be close to $1000.

I am running a complete GZ Motorsports kit and its VERY impressive. Bolt on-direct fit for LSx applications.. I bought the Pro pump for my high boost LSx application. Paid like $600 to my door because I didnt need some of the braided lines or the breather tank..

This setup is BAD *** compared to the crappy stuff Ive seen from moroso or aerospace...

Mine was very easy to setup. I got the jones mandrel from Kurt @ W2W and had it turned down slightly. Bolted right up.

A regulator is needed, and what you set it at depends on your oiling system. With a wet sump system you will actually cause premature wrist pin failure if the vacume is to high, because it will prevent oil spray to the pins.
